Winter Watering

When my thoughts are dried out
and brown
like the strawberry leaves
and raspberry canes
that scratch in my mid-winter garden

When my spirit grows thin
and cold
when the scouring blast
and burrowing chill
come to whither the roots of my soul

When my heart shrivels up
and hangs
like the dried plums I leave
to wrinkle and freeze
in the hungry and desiccate winds

Then a thaw comes along
with light
and I water the ground
with a generous flood
which penetrates down to my core

Yes I moisten the mulch
down deep
and bright lady bugs crawl
like poems from the soil
to bask it the bleak winter sun
