 survival of the fittest?

Interesting musings. I wonder if the evolution of the environment includes actors in that environment acting in a self-destructive fashion and poisoning the environment (Of course, I'm referencing pollution). Does the extinction of organisms who fail to adapt to new levels of toxins mean their evolution stopped or our own became unhealthy? Or maybe I'm missing the point?
