Alchemy is the process of moving from element to element on the periodic table. It is known how to do this in the modern day- using fission, they produce new elements (lighter) from old elements (heavier) and they sometimes produce gold.
However, producing gold in this manner is not cost effective, and it is radioactive.
At some point in the future they will be able to perform fusion, and then be able to produce gold at will from lighter elements. I suspect they may already be able to do so, but it would be extremely cost prohibitive.
Therefore alchemy is alive and well, it just costs too much money to perform the magic at this time. In the far future they will probably be able to manufacture gold at will and at a low cost- but what will be the point of it at that time? The gold will lose all value if it can be produced cheaply.
