| | night and day of the locust-microbe DDT http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDT and antibiotics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antibiotics were synthesized chemical products aimed to combat the outbreak of crops destructing insects and disease causing bacteria as a consequence of exponential growth in human population, need for cultivated land, and subsequent urbanization. As far back as 1939, DDT held the promise of eliminating completely all vectors of malaria, plaque, typhus, and yellow fever. DDT was also capable of protecting crops from harmful insects’ invasion; it also had the chance of wiping out several deadly diseases and at the same time increasing food production. On the other hand, the discovery of penicillin and the manufacture of antibiotics almost completely eradicated the spread of infectious diseases caused by water borne, land borne, or air borne microorganism. However, as time passed the death, deterioration, and extinction of higher food chain creatures ingesting DDT contaminated food supplies and the indiscriminate use of antibiotics made possible the opportunity for the insects and bacteria returning with a vengeance, staging a day of the locust and a field day of the drug-resistant tuberculosis microbe.
