They depend on probability and statistics, probably the worst inventions in the history of thoughts. If a species is reducing it's number of members gradually increasing or exponentially, it is obviouslyl in danger, but if it isn't, it's not in danger. The human species is growing it's population, but it is estimated to stop growing by 2050, and stay stable. But if hundreds of unexpected metiorites smash with the earth, humans will probably extinct.
