I don't know about the Alchemical side of things. But I suspect that solids, liquids and gases all behave the same. The only difference in their behaviour is time.
If you pour water into petrol or oil and wait a few seconds it will sink to the bottom. higher specific gravity.
If you place a gold coin on a steel plate and wait a few million years it will end up on the bottom. higher specific gravity.
I think this behaviour could be one of the prime movers of evolution.
