Re: I'll tell you why we are mortal.

Since we understand that evolution is an accelerating process, where did the early intellectuals find the time to develop intelligence. After all, day is as long as the night, and it seems to me that early astronomers would not have the time to even set up their equipment to take the measurements over the long term necessary to understand the process of the Precession of the equinoxes, let alone invent and develop those same instruments.

I urge you to read the link above. The following is a quote from Wikepedia:

[quote] Hipparchus estimated the Earth's precession in around 130 BC, adding his own observations to those of Babylonian astronomers in the preceding centuries. In particular, they measured the distance of stars like Spica to the Moon and the Sun during lunar eclipses, and because he could compute the distance of the Moon and the Sun from the equinox at these moments, he noticed that Spica and other stars appeared to have moved over the centuries.[/QUOTE

According to your estimates then, how long did a lunar eclipse last? Or a solar eclipse? Were all the other bodies in the heavens also spinning much faster?

Okay, I'm being facetious. But really, sillysally, this site attempts to be a genuine science site, and you are truly living up to your name.
