| chosen flavors Since the beginning of time nature chooses to operate with no more and no less but exactly six quark flavors. For lack of better descriptive words, these are up, down, strange, charm, bottom, and top arrange in the order of discovery. The up and down are the lightest quarks exclusively responsible for composing protons and neutrons. The others only appear briefly in high energy experiments. The proton is composed of 2 ups and 1 down and it lives forever with a lifetime of more than 10 years, bear in mind that the age of the universe is only 150x10 years. The neutron is composed of 2 downs and 1 up, slightly heavier and also lives forever if confined within the nucleus. But free neutrons on average can last as long as 15 minutes then die happily turning into protons, electrons, and antineutrinos. On the other hand lepton flavors also come in six varieties. These are the electron, the muon, the tauon, and their respective neutrinos. However, only the electron is the chosen flavor and together with proton and neutron forms all the chemical elements of matter.
