My foundations in physics goes back to my childhood and the toys I played with. Yes, toys. And one of my favorites, the yo-yo, had a huge impact on how I view string theory today. Without the string the yo-yo would not return to my finger. That knowledge has had a profound impact on my life. I have spend much time and energy trying to get the yo-yo to return to my finger in numerous lab experiments and find the string an important part of the yo-yo, and the yo-yo's universe. Without the string the yo-yo does not work. I will venture to say this: the string made me and the yo-yo one. I have not taken string theory much beyond the yo-yo but think I must let go and move on!
