Yes, string theory likes people to take their strings as real, not just mathematical.
However, I accept that a real and physical world
can be more than 3-dimensional but at most 4-dimensional. Once take time as an dimension also, then, a 5-dimensional world can be theorized, just like the Kaluza-Klein Theory. That is still physics-minded.
However, the ambition which targets at GUT makes the 5-D theory go futher away from physics to become a mathematical wonderland (11-D, or any high-D as what they like).
Anyway, for a person who believes that high multi-dimensional world is still physical, that person really has his/her own reason to believe that its sub-set, an one-dimensional superstring, is real and physical but not mathematical.
