Thanks for your long and detailed reply. I am glad to hear that you had not quite given up on your original goal but just modified your strategy to adapt it to present circumstances. I guess that's what I should be doing too.
As to your advice given in the last paragraph (quoted above), what do you do if you eventually end up with no TRUE friends at all and you have come to the conclusion that old-fashioned values like honesty, diligence, trust and fair play are no longer applicable in modern society? - I guess I have to think about this question too.
Sometimes I wonder - like theunify - what's the point? I guess I am just very, very tired of running against brick walls for so many decades and have to give myself some time to think things over from a more detached and pragmatic standpoint.
