Heat, and Temperature, are labels we have for the collective result of atomic collisions ... To my way of thinking they are just descriptors.

When you suffer sunburn, the actual physical effect you feel is the result of solar particles colliding with 'your' particles and breaking down the electomagnetic forces binding 'you' together.

This random billiard ball effect is driven by the contained energy of the particles involved. We interpret this as 'Ouch, I'm sunburnt'.
