When you suffer sunburn, the actual physical effect you feel is the result of solar particles colliding with 'your' particles and breaking down the electomagnetic forces binding 'you' together.
This random billiard ball effect is driven by the contained energy of the particles involved. We interpret this as 'Ouch, I'm sunburnt'.
