The universe must have some purpose for life, otherwise why would we have popped into existence. Metal rusts if it's left out in the air for too long, because oxygen corrodes the iron compounds through chemical reactions. Similar to that sentence, life (and everything else) blossoms in the universe because ________ . That blank is the TOE, and if nothing else I think that would be the one definate constant. The one thing, possibly a force, that governs everything, leads everything through the progressions and steps that unfold. Some property makes and ensures that a circle is round, and I think similarly there is a property that makes the universe the way it is. That would be a constant.
