There are several Standard Theorist interpretations of 'red shift' that remain unresolved and controversial.
Regarding a universe of contracting matter, I don't agree at all. G.P. Thompson (son of J.J. Thompson) proved that electrons are expanding fields; as recorded by J.W.N. Sullivan, in The Limitations of Science (Thompson subjectively overruled his objective findings, on the premise that "Obviously everything isn't expanding".)
This discussion has taken several turns that I have yet to understand.
