I completely agree with this statement. I once had a theory that John Edwards (guy on tv who talks to ghosts) was actually more of a psychic and able to pick up brain waves of audience members in order to be able to access their memories and thoughts.

As for the importance of belief, I think it all boils down to survival, one of the obvious key components and goals of life. In the broad view of things, believing in something instead of nothing makes the majority of life happy and capable of enduring hardships, helping to ensure survival. Belief in religion is something that helps describe the "goods" and "bads" in life and tries to keep us on the good and loving side of things, i.e. not killing people, which is just an aspect of ensuring survival.
