I will offer the reason I nay say string theory. If theres another dimension. It is independent of ours in all ways. string theory wants you to think that this one thing light can touch ours and 13-17 others? Incredubly massive and comming from no where? I say it's wrong because there is a simpler way to explain it.

I am someone who question just like you Triodit. The main difference though is that I do have technology that is an outgrowth of my theory and my technology is better than yours.
The proof that our universe is a quantum tunneling object is the big bang. it's not string theory you goof, it's a correlation between quantum mechanics and general relativity. Our entire universe is like a quantum mechanical object. That is why the big bang suddenly happened. So you are right that photon is a discrete unit of mass. The big bang sets up the allegorical "time within time" that is an eternity within an instant, occurring between when a quantum tunnelling object dissappears and reappears a fraction of a second later. That is the duration of our universe. But in theory it constantly reverses and cycles and thus it plays forth in all it's iterations. The reason the cmb has its irregularities is because they were left over from the state of our quantum tunnelling object before it left where it came from. So you see every time you send something faster than the speed of light you are mimicking the creation of the universe. It's demonstrated for example...
The reason the particle physicists are toying around with particle accelerators is because everytime they smash them particles together some of the fragments exceed the speed of light for a momentary amount of distance. That's how their mimicking the creation of the universe - by sending tiny particles faster than TSOL for brief distances. But their technologies sucks and is overpriced and is what I call the sledgehammer method. They have to use grace and do it with ease and then great power will be at their fingertips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The only large object built by man in recorded history that has exceeded the speed of light was the Hamel Device. You may think it is not true but if so you may not know the truth, that is stranger than fiction. Also one's technology can create weather and do anything at will. One can even create tornadoes now too and you can see the pictures of it if you look around this forum.
