Here's my problem with "self-aware". Very few creatures are in fact self aware. Survival Instinct and Self awareness are two different things. To be self aware you must be able to look in a mirror and say, "That is Me". It is not solely a human trait. But not all animals have it. A couple of primates and maybe a few others, but it's not as common as one would think.
Infants are not "self aware" for the 1st year of their life.
The question for me is, is the universe old enough for the congnitive ability to be aware of itself? It's possible, but I am with reserve given the limited information I have access to.
