I don't think Einstein was being sarcastic in that instance but, rather, ironic. From what I've read, his sense of humor could cut in many directions at once and was devastating...as was his humanity. I don't think he was being either sarcastic or ironic when he said,
"Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the Gods."
