I can guarantee you will not like this post. In fact if you do like this post you will have missed the point.

Let’s start, once again, with Sir Martin Rees. Hiya! (He said that we PRESUME that space and time are like the ocean, basically similar in every place, merely TO FIT our mathematics. If in truth space and time are like landscape, and different in every place, then we simply do not have the mathematics to describe it.)

So, many people think, heterogeneous homogeneous, who gives a damn? Sweet, innocent fools. Cute really.

These are two very different worlds to live in. Believe me, you were brought up in a spiritual environment where there are no ghosts and goblins down at the well, no fairies unless of course you happen to see one, photograph one, and persuade the supernatural being to chat to Jay Leno on TV.

I am being flippant to grease you up nicely so you can slip into the ideas I am about to wrap around you. Place your arms into the straight jacket, that’s it, and this will be a little … tight … OK.

I want to talk about neutrinos. Sorry, were you expecting something else?

There were no neutrinos in my Rutherford education, so what are these anyway? Well, the current esoterics, a belief system called the Big Bang, seriously worshipped by many balding men in smart clothes, tells us that a lot, a lot of hydrogen was sneezed out of nowhere. The story of reality starts with lots of hydrogen created by some God who is not God, no, no, no, no, no. Spontaneous creation, ha!

Hydrogen is the simplest atom, one of this and one of that, oh and a dollop of, um, you know. Proton electron and … a tiny ice-cream scoop of neutron in the middle there. Some clever clogs wanted an imaginary friend for the electron, a tiny little neutrally charged electron, and so in the fiction and friction of all things, the Pinocchio was invented. But Disney had the rights to that name so it was renamed the neutrino.

Stars are basically nuclear reactors that convert hydrogen atoms to the next atom on the list, Helium, and according to the Encyclopedia Encarta – there are two long distance by-products flung out of these reactions. Visible light in the form of photons, and we see light so we know all about that. We measure and dance and sunbathe and all know what light is. Secondly an invisible Wotever in the form of neutrinos.

Today we must accept neutrinos as fact not fiction - and if you want to know why, type Kamiokande or Cherenkov Radiation or Cerenkov into a web search and swot it up. Nothing exceeds the speed of light in a vacuum, but sub atomic particles DO exceed the speed of light in water, giving off an expanding ring or cone of blue light called Cherenkov Radiation. When you have a free evening browse your way to see pictures and explanations of the Super Kamioka NDE and the AMANDA and ICE CUBE detectors and so on, if you have not already done so. In short, neutrinos are real. Milan fashion experts say many trillions pass through your body every second at nearly the speed of light. On February 23 1987 at 07h35 in the morning, the dying gasp of a distant star we have named Sanduleak, produced a whole month’s worth of Cherenkov blue fairylights 1 kilometer in the darkness underneath Japan, in just a dozen seconds. These cones of light all pointed to whence they came, and three hours later real people saw that star explode in the night sky. 1987A if you want to websearch for photos since then, NASA has some pretty ones. It sounds weird, it is all empirical and sound science, OK.

So we have visible light, which bounces off the surface of things except for a few transparent things, where it goes through just a little slower and quieter than usual.

Now we have to admit there is a second something that is not light, it goes straight through matter, and atoms, and just take a moment to wonder, what form of eyes could actually see with those little swirling neutrinos, just as we see with photons. And what would be seen? What casts a neutrino shadow?

There is an answer so daring and lovely and we could dance with it all night. Maybe the "mind" is already some form of eye that "sees" neutrino "sight" and maybe consciousness is explained by neutrinos?

This is not as silly as it may sound. Get used to it, for this idea will feature on the front cover of a glossy science magazine in your dentist’s surgery any time soon. As inevitably as night follows armour. Probably some spark will claim the "chi" energy of martial arts is neutrinos sculpted into beams or something.

Then all debating hell will break loose.

Now for the – are you comfortable in there still, that gag isn’t choking you? What? You want it tighter? OK. There.

Now, heterogeneous space and time, eh? Sounds harmless, doesn’t it. You don’t mind if I fetch my chainsaw. Back in a moment.

Ho ho. Homogenous space and time is nice. Bland. Safe. No gaps that anything, unpleasant, could crawl into your bedroom through. Walls, nice thick castle walls, that stop bullets, and keep out burglars and beggars, distance that keeps the stench of those dying of malaria from our nostrils. Yes we like homogenous space and time for it is middle class and 1950s and floral print and hello vicar.

But Heterogeneous space and time is the stuff of your darkest nightmares. But enough. You are sweating, can I take that awful bondage off you now. Just keep the gag on and here, these handcuffs will soothe and relax you. Nice underwear, by the way. Kinky.

Alright alright! Less whimsy. More Science. OK.

There is a point to all this but, save that for the end. Now, every star produces photons as visible light and also neutrinos as invisible something else. We have NO IDEA what that something else really is. But in terms of numbers, well, atoms are like corks bobbing about in a sea of neutrinos. For all we know that neutrinos ocean may be turbulent, may have waves, and so on.

For all we know, matter is merely standing waves in the whirr and buzz and spin of neutrinos. Neutrinos spin with some half spin, which is so deeply esoteric I want to spank someone. Stop wriggling!

Ah – that reminds me – we think spin is simple, atoms just spin and all look like nice Christmas baubles but we truly have no idea. Spin NEVER occurs in public, sorry, in nature, without wobble. And wobble plus spin equals INFORMATION. Television and radio are wobbles on the spin of a carrier signal. Take out the carrier signal and you have Sex in the City or Desperate Housewives.

There are clearly enough neutrinos and their spin and wobbles, in standing waves of collusion or individual eccentricities, to actual be the hardware and software of both material reality and consciousness. Plenty of bandwidth there for a coherent broadcast quality signal that we interpret as "reality".

But what interests me specifically is the personality of every individual neutrino as it spins and wobbles. Photons are light and we feel that light is seven colours then X rays and a few other beams of stuff. Neutrinos could have a simpler or a more complex story but they are not just marbles on a tray, they have a story. Do WE connect to that?

Do atoms connect to that, certainly, because Neutrinos HAVE MASS, however slight, and that changes everything. Very few neutrinos hit an atom directly as we know from the rarity of Cherenkov radiation in Kamioka NDE and other neutrino detectors. A neutrino hits an atom in an average size house every second day or so, for that is how often cherenkov radiation occurs in a house sized tank of water 1 km underground.

But as for near misses between neutrinos and atoms, and the wobbles that accumulate on those spins, ah! The MOTION of atoms could be – I suggest – entirely explained by cumulative nudges from neutrinos. Remember these are vast numbers.

Neutrinos originate in stars, and every star is unique, just as every planet and moon is surprisingly different from the last. Red Giants White dwarves etc etc. Our scientists have three basic classes of Neutrino and theory (using maths that may be faulty) says they oscillate between different flavours. I am going all the way to say nothing is the same as anything else, in material reality, only in human fantasy and the creations of human fantasy can you manufacture apparently identical things. Every snowflake is unique.

I’m getting there, finally. Each constellation of stars might have a general soupy flavour, and the result is something very very uncomfortable for "science" and also for "religion" – if this constellation has neutrinos that together make a different blend to the neutrinos from that constellation, welcome to a scientific model for – Astrology!

It is simple to assume all things cancel and no resonance is ever found, on large scales, that is a belief and a theory, it is not a respectable scientific fact until you have actual data double blind tested and have seriously researched and disproven all the alternatives. For sure it is comforting to think neutrino oscillations are bland and tend to homogeneity. Chaos theory or some other theory might suggest we have no idea really, we must collect data. Who's up for it? Date time and place of birth, who would dare to research anything where space and time are heterogenous to that extent?

It gets worse. Neutrinos pass through a planet. That planet focusses the neutrinos from the original constellation and inevitably there are some near misses that alter the collective wobbles and spins of these neutrinos. Uncomfortable as it may seem, neutrinos provide a model for astrology to have a medium of transmission of information from stellar constellation through a planet to us here on earth.

Alright you can go now. I said you would not like it. On your way out, ask the next virgin to come in, would you?
