Shantnu It is the 'voice of the people'.
Student How we define that voice?
Shantnu Externally that voice connotes the synthesis of the composite knowledge of the society but its (society) internal voice represents the conscience of the society.
Student Does society, which is only a terminology, has a Conscience
Shantnu The conscience of the society is its moral values.
Student Sir, while defining the external voice of the society, you completely ignored its important organs of parliament, judiciary, law and order machinery, and its conventions and customs. Why so?
Shantnu All of these do not truly represent the voice of the people that compose a society.
Student Then what represents it?
Shantnu If we are to gauge its factual representation, and then we shall have to tap its think tank.
Student Sir, what does it comprise of?
Shantnu Its masters of the time. At any given time, there are always live-masters as there is live-subject (aspects) and the brain of each master is not only the store-house (repository) of the available knowledge of the age, it also inherits the legacy of the ages. The voice (thoughts/knowledge) of these masters is the true representation of a society.
Student Sir, what about the other organs of the society?
Shantnu These are merely, the exercise arenas, where so-called leaders, judges, bureaucrats and scholars of the day, make futile attempts to interpret the voices of the masters.
Student Sir, it is a tall order, you have to justify?
Shantnu My boys, who creates nations, religions, scientific inventions; who conquers Mt. Everest; who dares Nature's elements; who walks on moon, who sends rockets to other planets; who creates literature, works of art and sculpture; who composes everlasting symphonies and what not? My dear children’s; not by these leaders, lawyers, judges, bureaucrats or scholars! In every sphere of life, we have the works of these great masters, with whom we establish rapport through their works and get inspiration for extending the human lineage of knowledge (consciousness) to coming generations. It is the works of these masters which are the yardsticks to monitor and assess the quality of our actions, progress and achievements. It is these parameters of knowledge (intelligence) where from law-justice-conventions-customs and scholarships are born and which are the fundamentals factors which differentiate the fruits of our actions and term them as good and bad.
Student And how the inner factor (voice) of the society functions?
Shantnu As I have already explained, body as a unit, has no independence of its own. Its master controller is the mind (gross conscious), which is the data-bank of knowledge, acquired from the works of these masters and through the experience of interaction with different wings of society and the elements of nature. This is the basic instrument that gauges the effects and influences of our actions and their consequent reactions which again become the data bank of memory-cells.
Student So these two factors, determine the outcome of our actions. And now, Sir, what about the conscience of the society?
Shantnu The driving force behind each of our action, is the impelling force of desire. By fulfilling our desires, we satisfy our craving senses and the end result is pleasure. Physical action brings pleasure. But when this physical pleasure is registered in our mind, its thinking process wants it too and that too, in sustainable form. As mind is composed of only thoughts it could drive, its pleasure, only in thought (subtle) form. So the mind starts its discriminating exercise and weeds out all the irrelevant data from its think-bank (memory cells) and retains only that which brings it sensations (moments) of joy. Thus the pleasure that body (senses) sought, transforms itself into joy, after being sieved through the discriminating nature of our intelligence, thus what gives pleasure to our senses is good and that which brings joy to our mind, is right.
Student Sir, body's pursuit of good (ness) and intelligence’s pursuits of joy; is that all the human race is after or it is the brainchild of the thinkers?
Shantnu A good query but toned in humility. Scholars would have raised the heavens! For, according to them, what for is the intellect, and tons of literature, merely to have a go at joy? And what is joy and what it leads to? A moment’s sensation, that is all!
Nay, my child, it is not so. For voluminous literature that they cry horse about, was not the creation of lunatics or imbeciles. A small minority of human race, the real gems, has been giving joys to the genuine seekers. They sprang from joy and still are showering joy. The real worth of literature, art, music or scientific invention, is assessed by the joy it gives to their creators and their beholders.
