Student Is there a distinct science, dealing only with its components?
ShantnuFor the understanding of material bodies, we have physical sciences; for intellectual domain, we have different disciplines of scholarships; similarly there is a science relating specifically to conscience - it is known by the name of Religion.
Student But we don't have one religion...
Shantnu I get your point. I am not referring to religions, which are in prevalence these days. There are as many religions as the number of sects; and there are thousands of sects in the world - thus there are as many religions, beliefs and faiths correspondingly. But presently our subject matter of enquiry is conscience, which is one subject in itself, so it must have only one discipline for its knowledge (interpretation) and that one word subject is - Religion not religions. Our basic approach for understanding different aspects of human variations in relation to Nature has been based on the premise that humanity is one unit. That is why, while dealing with physical, mental, intellectual aspects, we have been very precise and specific and used only single term in defining each variation of human elevation, such as body, senses, mind (gross) and intelligence. Thus for, there has not been any ambiguity or double meaning of any one of the terminology Therefore, the subject that deals with conscience is one and that is Religion and this religion relates to whole humanity and not to any particular sect, faith or nationality.
Student By your statement, we should understand that every aspect of human variation (elevation/evolution) has only one terminology and that represents and caters to entire humanity, and not confined and limited to one sect or nationality.
Shantnu Exactly, the sum total of conscience of entire humanity has its knowledge confined in one subject, and that subject is Religion. And that religion is the religion of the whole humanity. In other words we can say Religion is the conscience of society (humanity).
Student Or as you had said Sir, at the very onset, it (conscience) is the voice of society (humanity).
Shantnu You are right.
Student Sir, explain to us its general role in the make-up of Nature. Because, though the role of its components is understood in the mental make-up of human beings, how these are relevant in Nature is not being evident to us.
Shantnu Though the role of man, in the evolutionary process is distinct and separately marked, both have a lot in common.
Student That is obvious, because man is the off-shoot of Nature.
Shantnu Though man is the miniature (microbe) representation of a vast system (macrocosm) of Nature, still he is much more than that because he is not limited and confined like Nature, which is bound to its cycle of creation - sustenance - destruction, whereas he has the ability to come out of its (nature) system and elevates himself beyond its binding spheres.
Student While the faculty of mind is to differentiate between good and bad, and that of conscience is to discrimination between right and wrong: what kind fruits the physical-material bodies give us (?).
Shantnu None at all. Because physical bodies are inert, thus devoid of their own will; it is the consciousness of mind that illumines them and makes them capable of action.
Student Sir, since our gradual elevation from sensual indulgence to intellectual activation, we have been witnessing their nature in the form of pleasure and pain, joy and sorrow; what type of characteristics does a conscientious man display?
Shantnu Body and mind, display their nature and results in dual forms, but as we upstate our level of consciousness above that of intellect, the nature of upper levels become singular though the consequent fruits fructify in negative/positive sense, unto the elevation of conscience. Therefore it is singular in nature, which is tranquil and its dual fruits are right and wrong.
Student Sir, its very name is suggestive and indicates its nature of tranquility (calm, peace) is temporarily induced by some foreign elements. Kindly tell us what that element is and why its nature is enforced one - thus temporary.
Shantnu Our intellect is equipped with the faculty of logic, therefore it assess and disseminates the material (knowledge) with the limited ability it has acquired thereof, but in the case of conscience, its tools of reasoning, righteousness, are inadequate to evaluate a state (consciousness) which is above itself unless it is tooled with the components (love, compassionate) of that state (conscience). Its immature state, due to the imperfection of its tools (logic etc.) induces on it an illusive state of calm and peace which is tranquil in nature.
Student When does its tranquil state transform itself into permanent state of peace, Sir?
Shantnu When intellect has made up its deficiencies of knowledge by merging with the supreme-intelligence, it acquires an eternal state of peace and that comes only after it has crossed (understood) its next two levels of conscious (ness) that of conscience and wisdom!
My dear children, so far we had confined the scope of our quest to one aspect of our mind (gross) that of material-nature only but from now onwards we shall take up its other side also, that of love.
Student Sir, you mean unto the level of intellect there is hardly any scope of love!
Shantnu In the field of acquisition of knowledge, though there is always a place for love in any field, love element is not of paramount importance, because essentially it is in its application that humanity requires its induction.
Student Sir, kindly explains.
Shantnu Splitting of atom was simply a scientific invention, which came by as a result of extension of knowledge in one field (Physics) but it is entirely a different matter, whether an atomic bomb is manufactured as the sequence to that knowledge and cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are destroyed or alternatively energy is produced in atomic-power-plants, for the benefit of humanity! So it is in the application of that knowledge (invention/discovery) that love element is more essential to put a check on their nefarious usage. Machine is not that important as is the man behind that machine and more importantly than that is the motive that impels the man to new discoveries and the implementation of their fruits that whether that application is right (moral) or wrong (immoral).
Student Moral and immoral are new words in the vocabulary of intellectuals. Sir, what is their contribution in the field of intellect?
