Human beings strive to have their expectations met. Expectations that may be financial in nature are provided for out of personal incomes or earnings. When expectations are in line with personal income levels, human beings tend to be satisfied with their life styles or standards of living. When expectations far exceed personal income levels, coupled with a strong personal desire or external social pressures to meet those expectations, human beings in an attempt to increase personal income levels may then resort to corrupt practices.

Corruption therefore arises from one’s strong desire to meet personal expectations in life, which far exceeds one’s personal income level. Stealing, exhorting, bribery, over and under invoicing, are few examples of corrupt practices.

Expectations in life are developed as a result of one’s exposure to varying life styles, which could be through personal experience or observed life styles of others. Expectations in life are determined by the total acquired knowledge and experience in this present life and in previous lives of the soul-driver of a human being. As we grow up from childhood through adolescence to adulthood, we acquire various skills which determine the various occupations that we may hold, which in turn determine our potential personal income levels. Unfortunately, based on different productivity levels in different parts of the world, same occupations do not provide same levels of incomes in different parts of the world. As such, when income levels are low compared to expectations, soul-drivers may resort to corruption in order to meet their expectations in life. This, unfortunately, is the case in a number of developing countries.

Once the spoils of corruption, initially on small scale, are tasted, the initiated become more daring and with time corruption on much larger scale become the order of the day. If initial corruption on small scale can be avoided, then the corruption on larger scale will not happen.

If people are gainfully employed, productive, and earning appropriate levels of incomes to meet their normal expectations in life, will they have the need to be corrupt?

Corruption is observed to be more rampant in a number of developing countries, where personal income levels are not in line with various occupations. An attempt to resolve the mismatch between occupations and income levels, by providing gainful employment, should go a long way to minimize corrupt practices among the next generation of adult population. To minimize corruption among the present adult population, income tax returns could be used as an effective control tool, as people shall be required to show evidence of tax payments in line with acquired personal assets or face the law for tax evasion.

With the right approach, leaders in this world, the world being a school and not a stage, should create conditions for gainful employment for incomes to be in line with occupations, providing for sustainable expected standards of living. This will then make it unnecessary for soul-drivers to adopt corrupt practices to meet their expectations in life.

Corruption may be effectively minimized by dealing with the root causes for lack of gainful employment, and having effective control of income tax returns to also ensure that personal assets are in line with declared incomes.

The Soul Theory has once again through the power of observation been able to understand the underlining basis for corruption and to propose practical and effective ways of dealing with this reality of life.
