Forum Introduction - 10-15-2005, 03:30 AM

Purpose
This forum was added to the Mathematics category to explore the numerous branches of mathematics and how they help us to form theories and expand our understanding of the Theory of Everything. Discussion on the history of mathematics and the genesis of certain branches of mathematics are also appropriate.

Background
The quest for a Theory of Everything has spurred the creation of many new branches of mathematics. These branches have allowed us to view problems in a different way, or from a new perspective, and have yielded a deeper understanding of our physical reality.

There are probably over a hundred branches of mathematics when including all the various specializations. For example:
  1. algebra
    • boolean algebra
    • abstract algebra
  2. trigonometry
  3. calculus
    • differential calculus
    • integral calculus
  4. graph theory
  5. number theory
  6. geometry
    • algebraic geometry
    • differential geometry
    • euclidean geometry
    • non-euclidean geometry
  7. applied mathematics
    • probability theory
    • game theory
  8. information theory
  9. discrete mathematics
  10. Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics
Posting Guidelines
The main guideline in this forum is to keep your threads on topic. Discussions should focus on how specific branches of mathematics have allowed us to further our quest for the Theory of Everything. Discussion on the history of mathematics and the genesis of new branches or specializations of mathematics are also appropriate. The need for new mathematical approaches and the weaknesses of existing approaches may be discussed.
