    2006-05-06: Dark Matter/Energy

The next chat session is scheduled for this coming Saturday, May 6th, at 3:00pm Central Standard Time (CST) or GMT-6.

    The topic is ...
    Dark Matter/Energy

We had a similar topic about a year ago (see this thread) so its probably about time to cover this again. We can use this topic to jump off to other mysteries of the Universe like the Pioneer anomaly. Post any other anomalous cosmic things you care to talk about in this thread.

    Timezone Information

You can use the timezone converter to convert to your local time. Once there, enter the day and time as specified above, then select US/Central in the "From Time Zone" column and your own location in the "To Time Zone" column, then click Convert. Be sure and unclick the "Use Current Date/Time" option. This will give you the time of the chat meeting in your own local time.

    Some other areas:
    Texas, U.S. - Saturday, 3:00pm
    California, U.S. - Saturday, 1:00pm
    India - Sunday, 1:30am
    London - Saturday, 9:00pm
    Madrid, Spain - Saturday, 10:00pm
    Melbourne, Australia - Sunday, 6:00am
    New Zealand - Sunday, 8:00am
    Sweden - Saturday, 10:00pm
    Canada, Eastern - Saturday, 4:00pm
    Pakistan - Sunday, 1:00am
Let's meet in the Flash Chatroom. Hope to see you there! It's optional, but you're encouraged to select the appropriate option in the poll so we know who's coming.

    Pioneer 10 and 11 anomaly

Once the pioneer 10 and 11 space probes passed the orbit of uranus the radio signals sent back have progressively shifting to shorter wavelengths, implying a deceleration. No one knows why, but dark matter has been mentioned as a possibility. Here's a nice article on the topic.

    Hi Robert;
Good article but I think my concepts of gravity can provide an answer that does not require extra dimensional existence.

    Clip from article:(my comment)
1 Invisible dark matter is tugging at the probes. (remove "dark")
2 Other dimensions create small forces we don't understand. (nonsense)
3 Gravity works differently than scientist think. (quite likely)
Number 1 is possible but not likely; Number 2 is pure nonsense; Number 3 is the most likely.

    My supposition:

If we consider that gravity is a process that is the absorption of spatial matter (ether), then the spatial density of this state of matter is greater within the inter solar system and thus it has an effective mass due to linear motion (relative mass). To the spacecraft, the inter solar system is increasing its mass as the craft goes further out into space. Another way to view this is to say that the spacecrafts are losing mass due to the decrease of spatial density of the outer solar system. Glass half full or half empty sort of thing.

Do you think we should tell NASA?

    I'm working all day

I'll be working all day today (and tomorrow) at my day job but will try and drop in to the chat now and then. I've got a big project that I gotta get finished by the end of the month. Busy, busy, busy...
