2006-12-09: The Edge of the Universe

Are we ready for another chat? Let's shoot for this coming Saturday, December 9th, at 3:00pm Central Standard Time (CST). I'll update the chat software before then.

    The chat topic is....

    The Edge of the Universe?

I started off with a different topic, "The Speed of Light", but then wondered about the Edge of the Universe and recalled how, when I was a little boy, I imagined the edge of the universe was where the sky meet the earth and beyond that were all the broken toys, furniture and trash that people threw out, and was piled so dense and thick that nobody could get through. Now I'm wondering if the edge of the universe is just beyond the leading edge of the farthest traveling photon from the center of the big bang. Or does the universe loop back upon itself somehow. Or ..

    Questions to ponder:
    1. Is there an edge to the universe?
    2. If so, what is it made of? bricks? a celestial sphere? the edge of a petri dish?
    3. What is beyond the edge?
    4. Why is there an edge or why isn't there an edge.
    5. Are we living in a giant black hole? Why couldn't we be?
    6. If we're living in a black hole and looking toward the inside of the event horizon would it look like the cosmic background radiation that our instruments currently detect?
It seems like there might be multiple edges to the universe. There is the edge of the visible universe which is more like an event horizon that is expanding at the speed of light. But this is not a real edge is it? It is more of a limit on how far we can see. Beyond this is darkness but the darkness can be entered so is not an edge. Travelling into this darkness past the horizon are there any other edges.

    Timezone Information:

I have added a countdown to the chat session on the home page, or you can use the timezone converter to convert to your local time. Once there, enter the day and time as specified above, then select US/Central in the "From Time Zone" column and your own location in the "To Time Zone" column, then click Convert. Be sure and unclick the "Use Current Date/Time" option. This will give you the time of the chat meeting in your own local time.

    Some other areas:
    Texas, U.S. - Saturday, 3:00pm
    California, U.S. - Saturday, 1:00pm
    India - Sunday, 2:30am
    London - Saturday, 9:00pm
    Madrid, Spain - Saturday, 10:00pm
    Melbourne, Australia - Sunday, 8:00am
    New Zealand - Sunday, 10:00am
    Sweden - Saturday, 10:00pm
    Canada, Eastern - Saturday, 4:00pm
    Pakistan - Sunday, 2:00am
Let's meet in the Flash Chatroom. Hope to see you there! It's optional, but you're encouraged to select the appropriate option in the poll so we know who's coming.

    Hello Fearless Leader ?

Afraid to let go of (illusion) materialism ?

The edge of the physical-material universe is the Light & Sound of Consciousness at its slowest most dense vibration.

Outer Music takes us to the edge of matter but cannot take us beyond.

Beyond the edge is the inner music of harmony or the "Sound-Current" (the voice of consciousness) as the source of all Light of Consciousness - and that "Logos or Word" takes us to Spiritual Planes - and eventually to the "Absolute."

Re: 2006-12-09: The Edge of the Universe

I like to consider the simplest solution. That there is no center and no edge of the universe and that what we perceive as the edge of information constitutes the limits of our reality.
Space is curved, and the further out we view, the more angled the path of light (information) becomes. However, since we experience an expansion, we will never be able to close this loop, in other words, we will never see the back of our head.
For me curved and closed shapes are the simplest representations of infinty, things with no beginning and no end. The shape of a circle from a line or a sphere from a surface are everyday examples of infinty in the lower and finitness in a higher dimension.
Space is both infinite and finite

Space is unbound and finite. Expansion is infinite. according to Relativity.
The observer defines his reality in an unbound world. whether they are two-dimensions, or 4.
String theory just defines the big-bang as having 11 dimensions which is ok if we are talking about "many worlds".

The Fearless Leader asks, How is this source of consciousness, beyond the edge of the material universe, connected to this physical place in which our bodies dwell?

It is connected through our attention which is the outer expression of our soul (i.e. the soul's power gone into outer expression) and when we reconnect our attention (spirit) back with its source the soul within us we empower the soul. By empowering the soul we recover its natural control over the mind and senses.

Re: 2006-12-09: The Edge of the Universe

I like the sound of this. But won't it spoil the mystery of the universe. If we reduce everything to numbers etc. Where is the Mystery ?
I prefer the notion that the universe is like a "Mobius Strip", In the context that it Doubles back on itself. Not to say that I havent considered other avenues, This maybe a bubble that we live in. Also I like to Imagine we are like a Human (or animal) cell, That is joined by whatever is at the far reaches of our Universe. Perhaps to Join to a much larger Overall organism (for a better word). We are probably just part of a much larger Grand design, whic our limited knowledge lets us percieve. Still thinking about it has passed many an Idle moment.
