2005-03-11: Theory of Everything: What is it? - 03-08-2005, 12:06 AM

The chat session will be held on Friday, March 11th at 11:00pm CST (GMT -6). This will be our first official ToeQuest chat session. Hopefully we will have many more to follow. If we don't have a large turnout, I'll do a little more and better advertising for next time. Here's the topic to kick things off...

Theory of Everything: What is it?

For this topic I'm looking for something that is a little beyond the obvious unification of fundamental forces of the universe.

Some questions to keep in mind when preparing for the chat session:

  1. What areas should a TOE encompass?
  2. Should a TOE simply give predictions or attempt to explain reality?
  3. How do we know when we have a viable TOE.
  4. Can a TOE really explain all emergent phenomenon?
I'd like to use the information from the chat session to create a high-level description of what a theory of everything is.

I expect this first chat session will be informal and anticipate that discussions will branch into areas that may get away from the central theme. That's ok as long as the discussions remains interesting and useful. I just want to feel things out this first go around, and we'll make changes next time if necessary.

Please post your pre-chat comments to this thread. If there are areas relating to the posted topic that you would like to discuss, you might mention them here. Any future chat room topic suggestions should go to the suggestions thread. Also, remember to review the Chat Room Guidelines thread before engaging in Chat.

Hi Robert;

One item I think of as a pre-requisite is specific Postulates. Considering the scope of the task at hand, This aspect was one one of my major goals.

Keep up the good work..........John

Chat Session Update - 03-15-2005, 12:23 AM

We pulled off our first chat meeting last Friday and I have attached the transcript for those interested. The transcript was edited for spelling, duplicate entries, etc.

Chat Room Participants
- force5
- Masa Hiryuu

We will have our next chat meeting in a couple of weeks. I'll try and advertise better for this next one and we will probably try a different time. Thanks to all who participated and hope to see you back next time.

If you have any comments about this particular chat session please make them here and I'll take them under consideration for our next chat.

Regards,
--Robert
