29th March 2008: Open Chat - 03-26-2008, 08:44 PM

As most of you are hopefully aware, I've been trying to gauge the members' views on holding a one-off chat, with a view to start up the chat season again (should it prove a success). The next chat will be held on Saturday 29th March at 8pm GMT, in the flash chatroom. Please check the timezone converter to convert this into your local time. I'll be circulating PMs to those of you that showed an interest in the poll of a few weeks ago, and I'll try and remind who's around on Saturday morning.

This will be an Open Discussion, enabling us to discuss anything that's on members' minds that relates to the Theory of Everything. As preparation, perhaps you could have a look through the topics in this forum that have been proposed as earlier chats, and see if there are any questions you'd like to discuss from those themes. Alternatively, perhaps there has been an interesting thread started in the past couple of weeks that you'd like to talk about.

If there is anything you'd especially like to talk about, or any questions you'd like to discuss, post them here so we can all muse over them before heading to the chatroom. Also, some members mentioned the possibility of releasing the chat room transcript after the chat. I'll have a word with Robert and see what the procedure is for this, so that members that couldn't make it can see what they missed!

I'll hopefully see many of you there. Please vote on the poll, so that we know who to expect!

Cool Re: 29th March 2008: Open Chat - 03-27-2008, 01:07 AM

I would suggest one topic we discuss, which is of major importance is the concept of calender's. How can different cultures have different calenders? and how can we base our calender on a Solar system that is constantly changing and therefore lacks any confidence level that can benefit future civilations? What will we do with the calender when we establish settlements on Mars? On the Moon? If it is complicated to communicate the time of day to a Japanese person now, what will it be like to ask someone on Earth when is your next birtday? Does this mean we are headed for a base ten calender? If the standard of living continues to improve, if we achieve some sort of sustainable peace, will anybody care if nobody knows what time they are supposed to wake up?

P.S. I would be much interested in asking whether or not we are ready for a system of calender of a base ten system, whereby there would be no set times of daily routine, but time would nonetheless be more accurate. There are other advantages which require a bit of pioneering pondering put plainfully, presentfully, and publically.

That sounds like an interesting topic to discuss, theunify!

Hmm, it looks like I didn't make the poll public, so I don't know who voted. Ahh well, I'll use the list of people that voted on the other poll to send out the PMs to, and tag on any names of people that post in this thread.

Well, I did think about setting a topic but, since this is the first chat for a while, I didn't want to restrict the theme to something specific. I figured that we could maybe make a list of a few topics here, and then when it comes to the chat, we can pick something to talk about given the interests of the members there.

To make things a bit easier for people, here is a list of the time the chat will be held in a selection of timezones around the world:

Los Angeles 1.00pm
Chicago 3.00pm
New York 4.00pm
Sao Paulo 5.00pm
GMT 8.00pm
Paris 9.00pm
Moscow 11.00pm
India 1.30am
Sydney 7.00am
New Zealand 9.00am

I hope I've not missed any major region off!

Re: 29th March 2008: Open Chat - 03-29-2008, 10:04 AM

Hello Friends:

"Is observation a cause?"
More precisely this question is stated:

When superposition collapses into a specifically defined state, is this change THE RESULT OF, Quantum measurement/observation?
OR IS IT:
Coincidentally at the exact moment of the quantum measurement/observation?

If you believe that it is coincidental, what then do you believe the probabilities are that it is the result of a random occurrence coinciding with observation 100% of the time.

Note this is meant to be a verbal discussion of this thought.
I do not expect that this will take up a lot of time as it is going to be more like a pole of what people think about this phenomena.

I do not see much to talk about. I do see a
GREAT UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE IMPLICATIONS OF THIS.

John.
