This next chat session will be held on Friday, May 13th at 11:00pm Central Standard Time (CST) also known as (GMT-6). You can use the
timezone converter to convert to your local time. Once there, just enter the day and time as specified above, then select
US/Central in the
"From Time Zone" column and your own location in the
"To Time Zone" column, then click
Convert. This will give you the time of the chat meeting in your own local time.
This will be our fourth official ToeQuest chat meeting. Chat meetings are scheduled bi-weekly using alternating times: Fri-11pm, Sat-3pm, Sun-7am (Central Standard Time). Since our community has 451 members from
61 countries, I use this schedule to reach the widest audience possible.
The topic for this next chat session is...
What is Dark Energy?
Quote:

As a brief summary, dark energy is a gravitationally repulsive form of energy that makes up two-thirds of the cosmos, and is accelerating the expansion of the universe. Cosmic expansion was discovered in the late 1920s by Edwin Hubble. However, in the year 1998 it was discovered by two independent teams of astronomers that the expansion of the universe, instead of slowing down, is actually speeding up.

Lets try and stick to the topic in our main chat room. If the chat gets too far off topic and we have a large turnout, I'll create a new chat room for the new topic and interested members can change rooms.
In preparation for the meeting, you can do some reading in the ToeQuest Article Archive on articles related to Dark Energy. Once at the Article Archive, just scroll down to the category named "Dark Matter/Energy". The current count is 37 so you have a lot of reading to do!
Some questions to ponder when preparing for the chat session: - Why is Dark Energy needed?
- What is the proof that Dark Energy exists?
- What are the paradoxes that Dark Energy resolves?
- Are there other explanations for these paradoxes?
- What exactly is energy anyway?
I may modify the list of "questions to ponder" later, but this is a good start to get you all pondering. I'll post a transcript of the chat session to this post for future reference.
Please add your pre-chat comments to this thread. If there are areas relating to the posted topic that you would like to discuss, you might mention them here for others to consider before the chat meeting. Any future chat room topic suggestions should go to the
suggestions thread. Also, remember to review the
Chat Room Guidelines thread before engaging in Chat.
