2005-05-13: What is Dark Energy? - 05-10-2005, 01:23 AM

This next chat session will be held on Friday, May 13th at 11:00pm Central Standard Time (CST) also known as (GMT-6). You can use the timezone converter to convert to your local time. Once there, just enter the day and time as specified above, then select US/Central in the "From Time Zone" column and your own location in the "To Time Zone" column, then click Convert. This will give you the time of the chat meeting in your own local time.

This will be our fourth official ToeQuest chat meeting. Chat meetings are scheduled bi-weekly using alternating times: Fri-11pm, Sat-3pm, Sun-7am (Central Standard Time). Since our community has 451 members from 61 countries, I use this schedule to reach the widest audience possible.

The topic for this next chat session is...

What is Dark Energy?
Quote:
As a brief summary, dark energy is a gravitationally repulsive form of energy that makes up two-thirds of the cosmos, and is accelerating the expansion of the universe. Cosmic expansion was discovered in the late 1920s by Edwin Hubble. However, in the year 1998 it was discovered by two independent teams of astronomers that the expansion of the universe, instead of slowing down, is actually speeding up.
Lets try and stick to the topic in our main chat room. If the chat gets too far off topic and we have a large turnout, I'll create a new chat room for the new topic and interested members can change rooms.

In preparation for the meeting, you can do some reading in the ToeQuest Article Archive on articles related to Dark Energy. Once at the Article Archive, just scroll down to the category named "Dark Matter/Energy". The current count is 37 so you have a lot of reading to do!

Some questions to ponder when preparing for the chat session:

  1. Why is Dark Energy needed?
  2. What is the proof that Dark Energy exists?
  3. What are the paradoxes that Dark Energy resolves?
  4. Are there other explanations for these paradoxes?
  5. What exactly is energy anyway?
I may modify the list of "questions to ponder" later, but this is a good start to get you all pondering. I'll post a transcript of the chat session to this post for future reference.

Please add your pre-chat comments to this thread. If there are areas relating to the posted topic that you would like to discuss, you might mention them here for others to consider before the chat meeting. Any future chat room topic suggestions should go to the suggestions thread. Also, remember to review the Chat Room Guidelines thread before engaging in Chat.

Regards,
--Robert

I like talking about energy. I will try to be their.

I didn't manage to go to the last chat session and I wanted to. So I will come to this one most probably.

I just realised that the chat session will be 6 in the morning here in Spain, so, in case I forget to have my alarm clock at that time, or just don't feel like to get up so early, (If I go it won't be since the begining: after one hour or so..), well, I am posting my short answers:

1. Why is Dark Energy needed?

Dark energy isn't "needed": it is just a thereticall physics "invention" to explain why the universe is growing+accelerating+this size....and others. Isn't it? But there are other explenations of scientists and people like us (I met some in other forums) for these things.

2. What is the proof that Dark Energy exists?

Of what I know, there is no proof that dark energy exists (neither dark matter). The only thing defenders of it base on is it's use (which is infinitly paradoxical: this1 because this2 because this1...).

3.What are the paradoxes that Dark Energy resolves?

I didn't know that dark energy solved paradoxes........what I do know is that it leads to some...

4. Are there other explanations for these paradoxes?

-up-

5. What exactly is energy anyway?

If someone can answer this question correctly, detailed, exact, scientificlly, philosofically......Then that person is half way to explain everything (=create a TOE). This is the question I make to my self all the days of my life, just getting up-and when I go to sleep (If I can do so...).

Thats pretty much it.

the simplest definition of energy is that: it is the product of force and distance. But since both force and distance are vector quantities and energy is a scalar quantity, the product must be a scalar product, which is also called dot product or inner product. And all the energy products taken together comprise a given Hilbert space specifically for energy. see more about Hilbert space at the link below

can the ones that where there tell me what you spoke about and how the discusssion evolved?

how many where you?

Robert;
Since bob and I both misread the chat-room time as AM we had a small chat; So I have attempted to answer your 5 questions here.

((Why is Dark Energy needed? ))

Dark Energy may be misleading here since it is intended to mean a "Force" similar to gravity but acting in an opposite manner. When it was discovered that the universe expands at a greater rate as we observe objects at greater distances, science needed to explain this phenomena that contradicted the standard model.
Dark energy is hypothesized as another force of nature so small that it dose not play a roll until the distance between galaxies are so great that attracting gravity force between them is less than the dark energy repulsive force and thus causing the universe to expand faster. In reality, they don't know the cause of the acceleration of the universe.

((What is the proof that Dark Energy exists? ))
None has been fabricated yet.

((What are the paradoxes that Dark Energy resolves? ))
No paradoxes, only the contradictions to the "Standard Model".

((Are there other explanations for these paradoxes? ))
The Theory of Everything will give the real solution as the simple fact that as the process that produces gravity decreases it produces a decrease in the space density at greater distances from the original "Big Bang". Its like saying the refractive index of space decreases so the expansion becomes faster.

((What exactly is energy anyway?))
The term “ENERGY” is applied to many phenomena to reference a quantity of force or influence between objects; however, all these forms of energy are summed up as nothing more than “matter in motion”. All energy equations define energy or force in terms of physical entities in their various states of changing motion. Too often energy is proclaimed to be another entity of the universe and assumed to be independent of matter – it is not.

Best regards;
Dave

Chat session summary - 05-14-2005, 12:08 PM

I thought we had another productive and enjoyable chat session. There were about five of us there this time. Sorry about your power outage Masa. I had one also, but it was only 30 minutes and was right after the chat ended. And Guille, you need to get your priorities in order. Sleeping??? We missed you Dave. I'll mention morning or evening next time so others aren't confused. I might also list a few locations with the time already converted to local time. The time difference may be confusing some people as well.

Anyway, I'll post a transript later today on the first post of this thread so all can see and I'll include Dave and Bob's discussion as well. Also, remember the Archive button to review the previous 3 days (or so) of chat comments.

Thanks to all who participated as well as the folks here who contributed. We'll do this again in a couple of weeks, probably at 3pm on a Saturday next time. I'll announce time and topic soon.

Regards,
--Robert

Robert,

I read an interesting article in a scietific Spanish magazine about self esteem and motivation: they end up proving that it was all crap: it doesn't really relate to many things, and probably is too fluctuative to controll as many companies tr to with their workers. You will say, why am I tellink you this? In one of the studies, they looked at the reactions of two different classes in high school (11grade and 12grade). The people who failed in the first class (the one with smaller people) ussually gave the guilt to external reasons (the exam was too hard, this teacher hates me.....), whiles the one in the second class (the older ones) accepted it wss their problem and fault. This prove that self esteem has to do with age and matureness. Youa re saying it's my priorities wats wrong, don't you think its un-mature? (don0't take it too sireously). You should think that here in Spaion and other Zones in Europe it is a really bad time (6 in the morning!!!).

BTW,

I will be there definatelly for the next chat session. So give it a ver yinteresting topic.
