    2005-07-24: The Many Worlds Interpretation

This next chat session will be held on Sunday, July 24th at 7:00am Central Standard Time (CST) also known as (GMT-6). We usually end after about 2 hours, but you may come and go as you please. You can use the timezone converter to convert to your local time. Once there, enter the day and time as specified above, then select US/Central in the "From Time Zone" column and your own location in the "To Time Zone" column, then click Convert. Be sure and unclick the "Use Current Date/Time" option. This will give you the time of the chat meeting in your own local time.

    Some other areas:
    Texas, U.S. - Sunday, 7:00am
    California, U.S. - Sunday, 5:00am
    Singapore - Sunday, 8:00pm
    London - Sunday, 1:00pm
    Madrid, Spain - Sunday, 2:00pm
    India - Sunday, 5:30pm
    Melbourne, Australia - Sunday, 10:00pm
    New Zealand - Monday, 12:00am
    Sweden - Sunday, 2:00am
    Canada, Eastern - Sunday, 8:00am
This will be our ninth official ToeQuest chat meeting. Chat meetings are usually scheduled every two weeks using alternating times: Fri-11pm, Sat-3pm, Sun-7am (Central Standard Time). Since our community has 610 members from 75 countries, I use this schedule to reach the widest audience possible. All members are welcome to participate in the chat or, if you prefer, just listen in.

This chat meeting will be our first one using the new chat room! When you click on the "Chat Rooms" option on the navigation bar you will now see a drop down menu with the new chat room listed as Flash Chat and the old one listed as Original Chat. Be sure to choose "Flash Chat".

This chat session will cover a controversial aspect of Quantum Mechanics that may be useful in explaining certain phenomenon, but it's explanation of reality is very bizarre indeed! We'll be discussing the Many-Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics, originally proposed by Dr. Hugh Everett III in 1957.

    The Many-Worlds Interpretation
The fundamental idea of the Many-Worlds interpretation of Quantum Mechanics is that there are myriads of worlds in the Universe in addition to the one we are aware of. Whenever a quantum experiment with different outcomes of non-zero probability is performed, all outcomes are obtained, each in a different world.
As a backup topic, we can discuss the idea of other dimensions as proposed by string theory or parallel worlds as suggested by Dr. Michio Kaku.

Please add your pre-chat comments to this thread. If you have any topics you would like to discuss, you might post it here ahead of time.

One more note to participants of the chat room -- I want to proceed with the assumption that all of reality is accessible and can be explained given enough time, thought, experimentation. You must be able to rationally argue your points. To say "That's just the way it is" or "God created the universe" will be frowned upon in the chat since that view assumes that there is a part of reality that is forever hidden from us.

For now just google, "Many Worlds" view, and you should locate several relevant websites that discuss this topic. Be sure to include the quotes in your search phrase. I'll try and post a list of references tomorrow.

    Regards,
    --Robert

I have found Dr. Cramer's web site to be an excellent reference with just about anything having to do with quantum physics. Besides the web text, he also has several Power Point presentations that can be downloaded. The Afshar test is quite interesting as a method to assess the QM interpretations.

Though I've found that the many worlds interpretations of QM formalism is worth reviewing once, it is not worth a second review or worthy of discussion.

    or worthy of discussion.

I find the Many-Worlds view incredulous, but what may be worthy of discussion is why this view was introduced and what problems it was meant to solve. However, I do offer a backup topic this time that covers additional or alternate spacial dimensions. For instance, how higher-order dimensions, used in mathematics by string theory, relate to the real world. Also the concept of alternative universes as proposed by Michio Kaku in his book, "Parallel Worlds". I'm hoping that's enough to keep to conversation going.

    Robert;
We seem to agree. I've just had more years to become more opinionated on these subjects.

in a many worlds scenario, who is the timekeeper? If there is one then this keeper must have a clock for each world and more than likely the rates of these clocks might not be the same and their zeros might not start at the same spacetime location (these must be possible in order not to violate the principle of special relativity). The singular solution that the rates are the same and the zeros are the same is for all the worlds to be at rest relative to each other, that is to say they are all in one inertial frame with relative velocities equal zero.

    Mwi

Antonio, thanks for the link ,i also found the same site on the web search. If one goes thru all of the discussion then one would find that site emphasize philosohical views.I also found another site which is- comparative religions of the world with same search criteria as MWI. IMHO- a true researcher should delve into this site, i did, some of the things still need proper interpretation.

Robert and Dave - "we always find what we are looking for- it is only Discovery and not an Invention or Quest". Same type of discussion was done about 5000 years ago between Rama (GOD"s human form of incarnation) and Vashishatha (his teacher) about Multi World View and it relation to the Immortal Soul, transmigrating thru these worlds. In some cases experiencing dual existence. This is narrated in a story called Story of Lila- one of these days i shall send it to all interested and post on our site. This is not streching a fairy tale-but if we compare this to how waking and dream integrates or coexists in our own life- a thorough investingation of ourself and it's three phases- waking, dream and comma would reveal true picture.

    sincerely,
    yogi

    Yogi;
I don't believe the misuse and improper interpretations of mathematical expressions of experimental measurements are ever going to prove the existence of a god for you Yogi.

Exaggerations of simple mathematical analysis for purposes of self-aggrandizement by scientist, will only lead to more confusion and complexity.

I might add that "Garbage In – Garbage Out" dose not only apply to the information entered into a computer; it also applies to the information entered into the human brain.

    Dave,
thanks for comments, i was commenting only on the articles, mentioned by antonio-i would urge you to read it. i am not going after the mathematical formulae-because they have failed to explain some phenomena in the realm of science. absolute does not need proof from math, science or religion. i agree with you as for the neourological inadequecy of living (defined by biology) organisms (humans are not exclusive to have neural perception). looks like the chat is going to be fun.

    thanks again and sincere apologies,

    sincerely,
    yogi
