    Re: fundamentals of chemistry

Electrons are arranged in shells, each containing a maximum of 2(((n+1)/2)^2) if n is odd and 2(((n+2)/2)^2) if n is even, where n is the shell number, electrons. Chemical reactions occur because a complete outer shell is the state of lowest energy, so, in ionic bonding, metals lose electrons and non-metals gain electrons then they are attracted to each other by electromagnetic forces. Covalent bonding is where electrons orbit both electrons, thereby filling shell spaces in both atoms. A more reactive element will take the place of a less reactive element in a substitution reaction and elements will react in whetever way will create a complete shell with the lowest bonding energy. More reactive elements form compounds with greater thermal stability. The reactivity of metals increases with atomic number but the reactivity of non metals decreases with atomic number. The colour is darker for heavier compounds and precipitates of metals reflect higher frequencies when the metal is more reactive. Metals form basic compounds whereas non metals form acidic compounds. Lighter compounds tend to be more solouble.
