Fundamentally, meditation is to assist alignment and so permit of contact with the higher self;the emphasis upon the importance of meditation follows naturally upon the realisation by the person of the absolute necessity for the
domination of the personality by the ego.Man at this time is engaged in many
pursuits and through the force of circumstances he is polarised entirely in the
lower self, that polarisation being either the emotional or mental body.An interesting point here would indicate that;as long as the polarisation is purely
physical,or purely emotional,no need for meditation is ever felt.Even when the mental body is active.no urge arises until the man has run through many changes and many lives, has tasted the cup of pleasure and of pain through
many incarnations, has sounded the depths of the life lived entirely for the lower self and found it unsatisfying. Then he begins to turn his thoughts to other things,to aspire to that which is unknown,to realise and sense within
himself the pairs of opposites, and to contact within his consciousness poss
ibilties and ideals undreamt of before. He has come to a point where sucess, popularity and diverse gifts are his,and yet from their use he derives no content, always the urge within persists, until the pain is so severe that the desire to reach out and up,to ascertain something and someone beyond, overcomes all obstacles. The man begins to turn within and to seek the sourse from whence he came. Then he begins to meditate,to ponder,to intenify vibration, until in the process of time,he begins to gather the fruits of his endevour.

kind regards michael/

Well said Michael. Besides meditation to make contact with herself, she can also make contact with and align with the external, cosmic.

I don't disagree with meditation as you described it micheal..

But as a student of martial arts, Meditation is primarily about proper chi circulation and breath regulation.
And I believe that you are right in that when the mind is quiet, you can be much more aware and conscious of your place on earth and in the universe.

Chi Kung, meditation, is about building and working with the bodies energy field. Its a system of maintaining and improving health primarily.

But you are correct in that when your meditation has reached the highest stage, your spirit is able to feel or sense the universe. Your Chi unites with the universe chi, and you are able to freely exchange information..

But that takes years upon years, and I haven't reached that stage..

Because meditation energizes your spirit and brain to highly sensitive state, your brain will be open to a much wider band of wavelengths.
You will be able to match wavelengths with other people's minds, and see their thoughts...

Theres so much to meditation, that I couldn't do it justice in 1 post.
Great thread btw.

p.s, theres a Great Book about this, and very detailed, called "The Root of Chinese Chi Kung Training" by Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming. (by YMAA publishing)
Its one of the penultimate books regarding this subject.

An assertion is Zen only if it itself is an act and does not refer to anything asserted in it.
