Some have said that being wise is knowing all that is truly worth knowing, others have said that if we were truly wise, we wouldn't be hanging out on message boards...
I have noticed that nothing sparks debate like controversy, and it does seem natural that when everyone is in agreement that there just isn't much to talk about. True wisdom and logic seem to have basic core irrefutable elements, so I wonder if that is why philosophy forums tend to either die down or become about something other than philosophy.
That is a good question Elizabeth,I have been to a few quiet retreats over the years,in
both christian, buddist, and hindu, the thing that hits you mostly about these places is the
silence! Now one could argue that the silence is because it is the rule of the abbot,or that
they are all wise and find communing with God in silence is the way to do it!
I have spoken to a few wise old sages over the years, and they all seem to be very
quiet,very peaceful,very calm,when asked a question,one would take about 10 minutes
to reply,as though he were a long way off,and had to journey back to the body to answer.
I do think though that as one acquires wisdom and thereby gains understanding of life
and an acceptance of others as they are,one seems to grow quiet, and become still.

This is interesting. I myself have lived life mostly silent. I tend to turn away from all things in favor of my own thoughts. When I was very young, I would fake being sick, so I could be home alone with my thoughts, when I was supposed to be in school. Alone with our thoughts, unification of one's self to the absolute can be sensed. With practice, as with anything else, one learns to travel the paths of higher conciousness to an ever deeper place within one's self. It can be addictive, after all, we all have OCD's of some sort. What I'm always learning to do for myself, is to go in and out at will, whenever and however I like. It's freedom of creativity without getting trapped within. I can almost glipse what it's like to be autistic. There are many places to become trapped. I even notice myself in a rocking pattern at times when I'm alone with my thoughts. It's like when the swinging motion soothes a crying baby, and mind becomes one with peace. We are creatures that seek to sense peace within the truth, within the patterns, of motion.

Peace is the closet thing we will find to a body at rest.
It may have been Confucius who wrote of the wisdom obtained in silence.
On the other hand, it may have been Grouch Marx who spoke of getting the word out?

I think it was Socrates who stated wisdom was knowing yourself. I don't think he was silent, but then again everything I know about Socrates came from Plato.
It would seem to me that you could be wise and still be communicative.
Silence steals upon you as the approach to reality is engaged, the further along the road
you go,the quieter IT becomes, until there is but no noise, apart from the sound of deep
silence.
