The corporate mentality.........accomplish more with less, so as to be 'competitive'.
The competition is indeed a game, although there are some few rules that can benefit the consumer in Canada if they take the time to learn them, the scanning code of practice being one, whereby if an item rings through higher than the shelf label, the customer is entitled to the first item for free up to a value of $10.00.
Those cheaper food prices come largely due to outsourcing and you will be surprised if you start reading the labels in Canada. Many labels say 'produced for XXXXXXXX, Canada'. The do not say made in Canada. Even those that say made in Canada may well include partially or wholly imported ingredients. The tainted dog food scandal which involved imported milk ingredients from China is one example, which occurred two years ago.

I won't buy any processed food from China anymore knowingly, because of such concerns, although that does not mean one is not exposed to same from products sourced, or when one dines out. Rice and mandarin oranges are a given that they likely come from China, Japan or Thailand, as these products are principle exports. (Wild rice grows in Canada, and it is actual a grass and very tasty and nutritious.)
Dill pickles from India, tuna from Thailand, frozen seafood from overseas, although some may be coated and packaged in Canada. The inroads being made onto the grocery shelf is silent and steady.
Back to the corporate and global control angle, guess who is among the world leaders in bio-technology?
Monsanto.
They control approx. 90 % of the GMO's grown on the planet, of which most have been genetically modified to resist the application of Round-Up, the world's best selling herbicide for the last thirty years.
Biodegradable has been removed from the label, because the product is NOT user friendly.
The list of persons who lost their jobs for accurately reporting the science on this product is frightening, and the reason there are no exact rules relating to GMO's is due to a deeply entrenched relationship between the corporation and the political structure.
GMO regulation was based on politics, not science.
Check out the terms principle of 'substantiate equivalent' and GRAS.
Agent Orange, Aspartame, Bovine Growth Hormone, and PCB's.
What do they have in common?
Monsanto.
Some interesting 'food for thought' in this item.

One thing that many people overlook when they talk about corporations, is aside from the elected politicians, the governing agency in all of it's manifestations functions very much like a corporation, with each department having it's own set of goals and budget which must be justified annually.
They are all in on the game.
Not a conspiracy theory.
Just a fact.
Global competition for resources, is a form of warfare that has been going on for centuries. The name Christopher Columbus comes to mind, as I live in North America.....
