By waking up from the dreamstate we call ordinary reality you don't get "outside" the dream, but rather are able view everything, dream included, from the non-dual perspective. The categories inside and outside, as well as all relative pairs, are no longer relevant.

Who's asking? One who is dreaming or one who is awake? Those folks who have never heard rumors that the reality they so take for granted is really an illusion and a dream, and aren't among those few who spontaneously wake up, will probably never know (although sneaky suspicions that something is funny about all this sometimes creeps in)...until they "die"...maybe. Those who have heard these rumors but have not actually awakened from the dream can "know" (believe) rationally that life is but a dream but not BE from THAT perspective. How can "you" tell if "you" are awake? No more "you". No more question.

Certainly, the lucid dream experiments will wake you up during ordinary night time dreaming and an analogy can be drawn from this to "waking up to the dream" of ordinary day time "wakefulness", which is the dreamstate I have been referring to - samsara. The important thing to wake up from is the illusion that your ego/persona is the real you. It does not have to be destroyed, just not identified with all the time (which it will protest against). It can be a useful tool as long as one is awake to its fictitious condition.(Forgive me for preaching to the choir.)
