Photons are their own antiparticles.

Now I am a bit correct, when matter and antimatter collide they anhilate each other releasing energy, But when two photons collide, nothing of that sort happens. If photons are antimatter of each other, why dont we feel the energy being released??

Hi Dipayankar,

My guess, though Nobody if I'm wrong please jump in, is they are already energy. Both photons are really the same, much like matter and antimatter. Remember the only difference between matter and antimatter is the charge + - . Photons have no charge, and therefore no difference.

A better question is why isn't mass formed, as in the beginning of the big bang.
I guess the original gamma rays from the big bang had a lot of energy, enough to create matter/antimatter.
Similar, very high energy photons I believe will do the same.

Best to you,

Pat

Photons with high enough energy do indeed create matter when they collide. This sort of thing is done in particle accelerators. See this link for some more info: http://www.hep.ucl.ac.uk/opal/gammag...-tutorial.html

Thanks Neutrelino for your post and for the informative, though somewhat technical, link.

I think working together and helping each other out is the best part of this forum.

Best to you,

Pat

I believe the question to be rhetorical.

Which means that near a black hole, after the event horizon there would be more matter than energy???

Hi Dipayankar;

I don't know. If matter was created I would imagine it would go right back into the black hole again since it would have mass.

Best,

Pat

And radiate energy which will create mass and will again radite energy... somewhere I am wrong because I seem to be creating a perpetual machine. Thermodynamics does not permit that..
