Talking Multiverse - 11-11-2007, 03:58 PM

I dunno if this is the right place to post this topic but here goes

My knowledge in this subject is limited to what I've seen in Spiderman Ok, so I like watching cartoons (lol). I've tried researching on the subject and I find it hard to seperate what is SCIENCE from what is SCIENCE FICTION

Do Multiverses mean that there are another handsome chaps who look exactally like me, but they live in diferent realities? Would they share the same DNA, fingerprints, etc, etc, like me? How do they work? Do they occupy the same space as we do?

Plus: what books would you recomend me to read on this subject (preferably light books and easy to understand)?

Hi Phoenix Invictus;

An excellent question that I'm sure no one has an answer to.

Michael believes we have dopplegangers, but I think he may have been kidding.

Professor Max Tegmark from the University of Pennsylvania has an excellent site dealing with multiverses at:
He only discusses multiverses at this site, no dopplegangers.

RP, Austin, Michael and myself have a thread regarding parallel antimatter universe at:
That you may find also interesting.

Good luck on your research,

Pat

I would say that the answer to your first question would be yes. If there are infinitely many other universes that make up the multiverse, then yes, there will be infinitely many other "yous." If you believe in the many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, then this says, in laymans terms, that when there is a decision to be made in a universe, two universes are created which are identical up to that point, and each have a different outcome of the event in question.

To your second question, I have no idea, but I would imagine that they would have to be in some sense "close" to our universe.

There's a new book that's come out called Universe or Multiverse. I've not read this, so don't know the level, but there are contributions from a lot of big names (Weinberg, Rees, Hawking, Tegmark, Susskind, Hartle, Carter, Smolin, Ellis, etc..). It might be quite interesting, if you like that sort of thing!

In fact, if you want to read chapters of the book without buying it (to get a taster), then go to the arxiv search page: http://www.arxiv.org/find . Here, type in the author and the title (from the contents link I provided in my previous post) and you should find that most of the articles are put on there.

Thank you all who answered this topic The links were helpful as well. I think I have a better idea than before, but I'm going to check the library for more books
