hi everyone,
freedom is free.
freedom is a state of being free.
for humans the experience of life occurs on an individual basis that is self governed and not subject to control by others or affiliated with a larger controlling organization, unless permitted.
all existence follows the same governing principles from origin. (action-reaction) with the absence of constraint in choice and action freedom is effectively determined by a tolerance for what is.
absolute freedom requires absolute responsibility.

What future technologies, you think, will remove this restriction? Could it be faster than light travel? The idea of 'direction', I think, can be mathematically connected to the idea of probability. The direction we take has the probability of 1. If the probability is zero then there is no direction and for motion, zero direction or zero probability means no motion.Originally Posted by RascalPuff

Hi Gunnar...I completely agree with all you have stated here because I discovered this throughout my own life. However, upon discovering that I also realized that our situation and the state of our situation is as you pointed out..."control by others and larger controlling organizations." I do believe that it is the state of that situation which impales many individual attempts to reach self-governance and true freedom.
Very profound post here...thank you!

hi mikal,
thank you, i have enjoyed your perspective as well.
to elaborate on "absolute freedom requires absolute responsibility"
freedom is governed by the same principles as anything else. things that exist locally are directly effected by its environment. for this reason people tend to seek an environment that accepts the behavior and intrests of the individual.
humans can do anything imaginable in one form or another and often do things because they can.
humans are capable of minipulating an environment to serve the purpose of preference (and do). this naturally creates a conflict of interest within the environment that disrupts the ecosystem (humans included). that is why being responsible in the inhabited environment not only recognizes the freedom of being, but the freedom of spirit also.

Merely by our population, our species shall have an impact just in staying alive, regardless of our many other recreations and endeavors, including the impacts of space exploration and armament detonation.humans can do anything imaginable in one form or another and often do things because they can.

We have expanded in population quickly, and increased our technology so rapidly, that I do truly wonder what we envision our relationship to be with the planet that sustains ourselves and all other species.
Are we at risk of exceeding the carrying capacity of our habitat? Do we, as an intelligent species, have the ability to intervene and mitigate such a possibility, if modeling should lead us to that conclusion?
We are caught in a trap of our own making, yet we are still 'free' to choose, individually, and collectively, the way in which we live today, and set a course for the morrow.
The outcomes will be determined by those who act on this 'freedom of choice'.
By small measures, are great achievements realized.....
So many paths to the same destination,
would, but I could, experience them all...
Of course you are right about freedom being free, gunnar - with the qualification that responsibility precedes true freedom.
Abraham, for example, was free to murder his son, Isaac, and under God's orders, was agreed to do it. An angel of God intervened and belayed Isaac, with the obsidian dagger in his hand raised above his son on the sacrificial altar - that's all that kept Abraham from 'suspending the ethical', 'on God's order- the word of a 'higher authority'. Abraham, on the other hand, was free to refuse God's order to do murder upon his son, and, should have done so...
The example of David Berkowitz murdering people "because his dog - spells 'god' backwards - told him to do it", also, the example of the 3rd Reich, with tens of millions of people suspending the ethical, because 'Der Fuhrer' (a higher authority) told them to do it. These are examples of cases where the individual abandoned their powers of the freedom to take personal responsibility, and surrendered their will to responsibility abusing-authority; including that of the parable in the Abraham and Isaac episode, regarding the Old Testament's metaphor of God's authority, and the immutability of the responsibility of distinguishing right from wrong. Had Abraham truly been free - and excercized that freedom - he would have refused God's order to do murder. Hence, my absolute agreement with - and gratitude for - your clause of qualification that 'absolute freedom requires absolute responsibility'. - Regards, RP

Freedom, I think it appears to be so elusive because well, it knows no bounds. We try to grasp it with something which appears just as elusive as freedom itself ... our minds. How does one measure it? Is it even possible? Are we only able to capture but a portion of it in an instance? Monks, holy-men, and the enlightened would tell us that freedom comes with no charge. I wonder how many of those would have come up with the time to think that without others fighting for freedom of tyranny. When freedoms are controlled and manipulated, rather than respected and upheld, freedom fights. Some might say that it's a heavy cost to pay, the Spartans thought it was the way to true freedom, to die in battle. Pay with your life to set your soul free?
One movie in particular comes to mind on the thoughts of freedom, Braveheart. There is the end of course, and then there is a speech somewhere near the begining and it's a good one. Rascal, I hope you don't mind.
It's not about understanding... it's about *not* giving up!What Dreams May Come.

The journey to absolute responsibility precedes the acquisition of absolute freedom. That journey is about the freedom of being and the freedom of spirit. This is because there is not only the inhabitable environment outside of us but there is also an inhabitable environment within us. It is quite important that we stop recycling information absorbed since birth and begin to experience our own original thoughts.
This inner inhabitable environment is who we are in identity and what we are in character. An inner clash with and against recycled information absorbed becomes an ethics of individuality and mutation and changes in character and if it becomes a prolonged oscillation between extremes of emotion that can be felt to the very core of being, it culminates in achievement of a high level of insight and intellectual understanding that can be seen as an entanglement with the objective to achieve absolute responsibility where absolute freedom is won….not an easy battle but one well worth fighting through!!
