War Alternately Reveals & Obliterates Truth

"You may have no interest in war, but war has an interest in you". - Tolstoy

"In times of war, truth is the first casualty" - Sen. Hiram Johnson, 1917 (from an ancient quote)

Although there are those who disagree, some wars are indeed worth fighting.

World War II is a recent example.

Moreover, had the 3rd Reich not attacked Russia, it may have maintained the conquest of Europe and installed a major socio-political (Fascist) influence on the entire world.

Refer: Just and Unjust Wars, by Michael Walzer.

"Generally speaking, war is a socially unpopular subject ('A negative not to be dwelled upon; maybe it will go away'), while it simultaneously continues to be among the most extensive threats to the very existence of humankind. War is among the greatest plagues on earth, and as such, its causes, effects and possible remedies need be studied, subjected, and otherwise openly issued - in order that it may be understood and thereby permanently extinguished. The alternative is tragically avoidable oblivion - the extinction of posterity."

Re: War Alternately Reveals & Obliterates Truth

War is the natural state and heritage of evolving man; Peace is the social yardstick measuring civilization's advancement. Warfare persists because man is human, evolved from animals, and all animals are bellicose.

One of the early causes of war was-Religion-the desire to make converts to the cult. The early religions all sanctioned war. Only in recent times has religion begun to frown upon war. The early priesthoods were, unfortunatly, usually allied with the military power. One of the great peace moves of the ages has been the attempt to separate church and state.
