    Evolution and meaning in life.

Does Darwinian evolution make meaning in life untenable? This is something that has been really bothering in the past couple of years. I read Darwin's Dangerous Idea by Daniel Dennett and felt like the bottom dropped out. I have a bleak outlook now and would like very much to know if there is an alternative to materialistic reductionism.

I haven't read the book you speak of ... To me Darwinian evolution has the opposite effect .... It lets me understand whats going on all around me ... it provides a solution that is statistically very satisfying. It lets me understand how far, how immensely far, we have come... and guess what .... we did it on our own.

This gives me a decidedly optimistic outlook on life, its successful, if it faces 'insurmountable' problems, it simply tries an 'insurmountable' number of times. My belief is that life (from earth) will go on, possibly forever, who knows where.

To me, evolution is the only thing that gives 'meaning' to life ....

However, as Michael has said, there are plenty of other theories around here .... good luck
