The waxing and waning of the phases of the moon is a special menstrual lunar cycle that repeat regularly every month from new moon to full moon back to new moon. The facsimile or exact copy of this cycle is 29˝ days. Since Julian or Gregorian calendar month alternate between 30 and 31 days (except February) there is a good chance of 2 new moons or 2 full moons happening in the same month. For all practical purposes the former celestial event can be called a black moon (vampire moon), the latter a blue moon (werewolf moon). Interestingly enough the year 2006 had neither black nor blue moon while 2007 had a blue moon of June and 2008 had just a black moon of August.
Since nature has no selfish reasons or axes to grind regarding the regularity or irregularity of its natural cycles human obsession with its imposing fixed perpetual calendar perpetuated the legendary lunatic cycles of the werewolf and vampire. Similarly, the human nature of consciousness and subconsciousness between wakefulness and sleepiness is a natural cycle corresponding to the rising and setting of the Sun or Earth’s rotation around its 23° inclined axis to the ecliptic path that annually gives the recurrence of the 4 seasons. However, the survival instinct to stay awake during a full Harvest Moon near the autumn equinox and during the next full Hunter’s Moon resulted in 2 full sleepless months of September and October, sometime keeping active by the pretentious forced or taxed regular musical jazz rhythms from the sound of a brass saxophone.
