Re: Whether the weather is the T.O.E.

Awoke to a balmy -28F this morning, here in the north.

Coldest weather I have ever experienced was -55F, while running the 1987 Yukon Quest. At that temperature, the sled dogs walk, so as not to frost their lungs, and the UHMW sled runners screech over the snow like fingernails on a blackboard.

The most frightening thing is that white gas does not vaporize quickly at that low temperature. Starting a fire, even with the assistance of liquid fuel, can be difficult. You don't get many strikes of the match before you risk frostbite.

I still have all of my fingers and toes.

    Enough said....

True, there is always weather. Empires come and go; Sultan after Sultan rises to the throne, but, after they’re gone, the summer still blooms with the rose, and still the water in the river flows…

Hi Labelwrench....boy I gotta admire your stamina...I'm sure that in -55 I would freeze to death right on the spot and the poor sled dogs would never get harnessed up....lol...glad to hear you still got your fingers and toes.....

Re: Whether the weather is the T.O.E.

Wikipedia is another entertaining place to romp around as these internet venues go.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meteorology

Think I'll try to figure out why there are 37,300,000 references to meteorology on the internet and yet weather 'forecasting' may as well rate on a lower scale than reading tea leaves.

No offence intended, neither is considered to be an exact science.....

    Later,

P.S. - Wouldn't dare to throw a "wrench" into the works

Re: Whether the weather is the T.O.E.

In 350 BC, Aristotle wrote Meteorology.[3] Aristotle is considered the founder of meteorology. For 2,000 years, no one added anything significant to his findings (Farrand, 1991).

We've certainly been studying the weather longer than we have been practicing rocket science.

I have no idea what Farrand means by that?

According to this link, Aristotle only had 4 elements in his theory namely: fire, air, earth, and water. Now we have more than 90 naturally occurring chemical elements as found in the periodic table.

Re: Whether the weather is the T.O.E.

A book written by Theophrastus, a pupil of Aristotle, in 300 B.C. Book of Signs was one of the first written attempts to forcast weather by listing over 200 empirical rules or weather indicators that looked at natural signs such as the shape of clouds or the color of the sky.

    Two correct rules:
Whenever there is fog, there is little rain.
A halo around the moon portends rain.

    An incorrect rule:
Wind blows in the direction of shooting stars.

Though not all of these empiricisms were correct, this book had a lasting influence over the next 2000 years.

Euclid's Elements http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euclid's_Elements founded the branch of deductive mathematics called Euclidean geometry. An Arab founded inductive algebra http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebra
