Top Health Journal Slams WHO's Handling of Pandemic

PARIS – The World Health Organization’s handling of the swine flu pandemic was deeply marred by secrecy and conflict of interest with drug companies, a top medical journal said Friday.

The British Medical Journal, or BMJ, found that WHO guidelines on the use of antiviral drugs were prepared by experts who had received consulting fees from the top two manufacturers of these drugs, Roche and GlaxoSmithKline, or GSK.

In apparent violation of its own rules, the WHO did not publicly disclose these conflicts when the guidelines were drawn up in 2004, according to the report, jointly authored by the London-based non-profit Bureau of Investigative Journalism.

The WHO's advice led governments worldwide to stockpile vast quantities of antivirals, and its decision to declare a pandemic in June 2009 triggered the purchase of billion of dollars worth of hastily manufactured vaccines.

Much of these stocks have gone unused because the pandemic turned out to be far less lethal than some experts feared, fueling suspicion that Big Pharma exerted undue influence on WHO decisions.

The report also reveals that at least one expert on the secret, 16-member "emergency committee" formed last year to advise the WHO on whether and when to declare a pandemic received payment during 2009 from GSK.

Announcing that swine flu had become a global pandemic automatically triggered latent contracts for vaccine manufacture with half-a-dozen major pharmaceutical companies, including GSK. The WHO has refused to identify committee members, arguing that they must be shielded from industry pressure. "The WHO's credibility has been badly damaged," BMJ editor Fiona Godlee said in an editorial.

To repair that damage, the global health body must reveal the membership and any conflicts of interest of its emergency committee, and develop "stricter rules of engagement with industry that keep commercial influence away from its decision making," she said.

World Health Organisation chief Margaret Chan, meanwhile, on Thursday decided to maintain a pandemic alert nearly a year after she placed the world on maximum readiness for the new swine flu virus. The WHO said following advice from a panel of scientists that although the outbreak had declined, cases of A(H1N1) influenza were expected to continue in the coming weeks mainly during the southern hemisphere's flu season.

WHO’s own review into the operation of the International Health Regulations and WHO’s handling of the pandemic is now being conducted by Harvey Feinberg, president of the US Institute of Medicine, and will report its findings next year. Dr Chan and Professor Feinberg have both made clear the need for a thorough investigation. But questions are already arising about how independent the review will turn out to be. According to the International Health Regulations list in our possession, some 13 of the 29 members of the review panel are members of the International Health Regulations itself and one is the chair of the Emergency Committee. To critics that might suggest a somewhat incestuous approach.

Professor Mintzes does not agree with WHO’s explanation that secrecy was needed to protect against the influence of outside interest on decision making. "I can’t understand why the WHO kept this secret. It should be public in terms of accountability like the expert advisory committees. If the rationale of secret membership is not to be unduly influenced, there are other ways of dealing with this through strong conflict of interest provisions," she said.

She also believes that the very nature of allowing a trigger point for vaccine contracts opens the system up unnecessarily to exploitation. "It seems a problem that this declaration might trigger contracts to be realised. There should be safeguards in place to make sure those with an interest in vaccine manufacturers can’t exploit the situation. The WHO will have to look long and hard at this in future," she said.

The number of victims of H1N1 fell far short of even the more conservative predictions by the WHO. It could, of course, have been far worse.. Planning for the worst while hoping for the best remains a sensible approach. But our investigation has revealed damaging issues. If these are not addressed, H1N1 may yet claim its biggest victim—the credibility of the WHO and the trust in the global public health system.

Scripps Research Team Finds Structure of "Swine Flu" Virus

The Findings Explain Why Young People Have Been More Vulnerable than Older Individuals in Recent Pandemic

LA JOLLA, CA—March 22 2010—A team of scientists from The Scripps Research Institute and other institutions has solved the structure of a key protein from the virus that caused last year's "swine flu" influenza epidemic. The structure reveals that the virus shares many features with influenza viruses common in the early 20th century, helping to explain why, in general, older individuals have been less severely affected by the recent outbreak than younger ones.

The team's findings were published in the March 25, 2010, issue of Science Express, an advance, online publication of selected research papers from the prestigious journal Science.

In the study, the team describes the structure of the hemagglutinin (the influenza virus envelope protein) from the H1N1 swine flu virus that triggered the pandemic in 2009 and is still circulating in the human population. The team then compared the swine flu hemagglutinin protein with a range of different human H1N1 flu viruses in the past century. "

Parts of the 2009 virus are remarkably similar to human H1N1 viruses circulating in the early 20th century," said Scripps Research Professor Ian Wilson, who was the senior author of the study. "Our findings provide strong evidence that exposure to earlier viruses has helped to provide some people with immunity to the recent influenza pandemic."

The information should be useful for scientists and public health officials as they respond to current and future pandemics.




So, Scripps found that the Swine Flu virus is very similar to the 1918 Spanish Flu virus. Could a bioengineering lab take the old viral strain and alter it to create a new, more deadly virus in order to create a massive pandemic? Did it fail because much of the population already maintains a resistance to the old strain? Are we to expect another, even more deadly attempt to create a pandemic via bioengineering?

These scientists haven't read my premise, I would suppose. Viruses are part, and integrated into our human societies. These viruses have a purposeful intent, and are not just random pieces of life's tinker toys. If a pandemic were pursued by natural causes, then it must have a strong purpose and intent, a justification and reason to kill so many people. This is what they are missing. Bioengineers are unable to engineer a purpose within the virus, only an unsustainable task.

The purpose of a virus is to upgrade life. Forcing them to kill is against their protocol....

Faked Pandemics - a threat for health

In order to promote their patented drugs and vaccines against flu, pharmaceutical companies have influenced scientists and official agencies, responsible for public health standards, to alarm governments worldwide. They have made them squander tight health care resources for inefficient vaccine strategies and needlessly exposed millions of healthy people to the risk of unknown side-effects of insufficiently tested
vaccines.

The "birds-flu“-campaign (2005/06) combined with the "swine-flu“-campaign seem to have caused a great deal of damage not only to some vaccinated patients and to public health budgets, but also to the credibility and accountability of important international health agencies. The definition of an alarming pandemic must not be under the influence of drug-sellers.


The member states of the Council of Europe should ask for immediate investigations on the consequences at national as well as European level.

It is embarrassing that the countries of the Americas can't pull themselves together to fight the same corruption that their European counterparts experience.

Even so, how effective will the rulings against such corruptions be as they stand against the interests of Big Pharma? The ones who pull the strings of the drug companies to produce viral bioengineering continue to be hidden from our eyes.

The following quotes resounded with me:


...Can you imagine the outrage if an herbal product sent fifty kids to the hospital suffering from convulsions? Health authorities across the world would be quick to condemn the product, and they'd confiscate it right off the shelves while shutting down the operations of its manufacturer. But somehow when a vaccine does the same thing, these same health authorities urge people to keep on injecting their children with it!

It makes no sense. But then again, the vaccine industry was never based on rational thinking in the first place. If health authorities were truly rational, they'd be handing out vitamin D supplements to children instead of injecting them with vaccines, because vitamin D has been scientifically proven to provide better protection against the flu than vaccines. Of course, to ask health authorities to make rational decisions is sort of like asking politicians to start telling the truth. In the complicated world of profits and politics, rational, honest thinking just doesn't get any traction. It's far more profitable to keep lying to the world and raking in billions of dollars each year off dangerous vaccines, even as they continue to harm innocent children.

...At some point, the parents whose babies are being harmed or potentially even killed by these vaccines can only blame themselves. They were the ones who brought their babies to be injected with a chemical adjuvant and viral fragments, and they should know better than to trust the government when it comes to health advice. The government, after all, still says that pharmaceutical chemicals are good for you while vitamins, herbs and natural remedies are dangerous. And it's the government that approved the very vaccines that are right now sending these children to the hospital.

Any parent that trusts the government with the health of their child is setting themselves up for catastrophe. And that catastrophe could very well cost them the life of their child.

Coincidentally Lesk, while I was away travelling my daughter received a letter informing her that if my granddaughter did not get her vaccine update she could not return to school in September. My daughter struggled with this and upon arriving at the Doctor's office she voiced her opinion, was given the alternative for K to just opt out of school. Tough call, K had one injection but they tried to give her the new Menactin vaccine which my daughter flatly refused.

K's friend had the Menactin vaccine and a day later ended up in hospital fighting a fever of 104 and a strange infection attacking her system. She could have died, was in hospital for a week because her kidneys and liver stopped functioning properly. absolutely nobody suspected a vaccine reaction...so there you go, it was not reported and more than likely was a reaction.

Again we need this awakening to be worldwide!

NY Lawmakers Seek Salmonella Vaccine

Britain enjoys the safest egg supply in Europe, which many believe has to do with its vaccination program that fights against the dangerous and, many times, deadly, Salmonella pathogen. Now, says the Associated Press, two New York legislators are looking to mandate farmers in the state to vaccinate their chickens against the pathogen that was at the heart of the recent and massive egg recall and Salmonella outbreak.

This weekend, Senator Daniel Squadron and Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh announced their proposal in front of a Manhattan food store, wrote the AP. The two said that the vaccinations, which cost about one cent for every one-dozen eggs, could just about eradicate the over 100,000 cases of Salmonella reported across the US annually, assuming every state enacted such mandates, said the AP. The legislation is scheduled for introduction this week.

Meanwhile, we just wrote that a large mound of manure and rodent, fly, maggot, and wild bird infestations, among other disgusting findings, were revealed at one of the two egg producers blamed on the outbreak and recall. The findings were a result of a US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) inspection at Wright County Egg (Quality Egg) in Iowa.

At the other egg producer, Hillandale Farms, FDA inspectors found unsealed rodent holes and live rodents entering facilities, standing water, and liquid manure leaking into a section of the floor.

Now, many wonder if the massive recall involving over a-half billion eggs and a couple of thousand illnesses could have been largely prevented with low-cost vaccinations, said the AP recently. Although not mandated in the US, the vaccination has been available in the US since 1992.

A 2009 survey conducted by the European food safety agency revealed that about one percent of British flocks were infected with Salmonella versus 60-to-70 percent of other European flocks, said Amanda Cryer, a spokeswoman for the British Egg Information Service, the AP recently reported. The Salmonella vaccination works to prevent chickens from becoming sick with Salmonella and passing the bacteria to their eggs.

In Britain, the vaccination program is needed for producers to obtain an industry seal of approval, wrote the Wall Street Journal earlier this month. In the US, about half of the producers vaccinate their hens, said the Journal, which noted that the New York Times wrote that officials at the FDA considered a mandate to vaccinate hens against the pathogen under its emerging egg safety rules. The FDA rejected the vaccination program.

Salmonella bacteria can either contaminate the outside of the shell from fecal matter or infect the inside of the egg if the chicken has Salmonella poisoning, said the Des Moines Register, which also wrote that, based on the magnitude of the recall, egg prices are expected to increase, with the wholesale price of a dozen eggs up about 40 percent since news of the outbreak made headlines.

Right after the egg recall in the news, I wondered if there would be a quick response by our lawmakers to vaccinate hens. There was....

I am only considering that an outbreak was ill-conceived in advanced to pursue further agendas for big Pharma to sell vaccines. Or, even worse, other scenarios of population control were considered.

This may not be so. Maybe all major egg producers in America did simultaneously get careless, and let the bacteria become rampant within a few months. Maybe the lawmakers were, for once, very diligent in solving the problem, immediately. Maybe we are all in good, caring hands and should not be concerned with what might be in the vaccine mix.....

As one who has raised a back yard flock from chicks four times over, I have some insight into the matter. My chicks were never vaccinated as the hatchery which was supplying chicks does not do this at one day of age. (One day old chicks are shipped in cardboard boxes by air and we never lost a chick.) One batch I hatched at home in an incubator and it was a great learning experience.

Maintaining a clean environment even for a flock of two dozen is a lot of work and water supply and feed must be maintained regularly as well as the removal of excrement. What the chickens are fed and whom enters the coop are other possible means of entry for pathogens.

The larger the operation, the more difficult it becomes to monitor and remove any bird that may look to be coming ill and to do proper management.

Given the lack of people willing to work in sectors up north, I am wondering if skilled labor might be one factor to consider.

Extreme weather also brings management problems as chickens are very vulnerable to stress from heat and humidity.

The scale of size (overcrowding) relating to profitability also is a stress on the birds, contributing to illness.

Our education systems should teach proper food safety as a mandatory course.

The above would be some of my thoughts on this issue.
