    dolphin ring

For people who smoke, some are capable of creating smoke rings. This ability is not exclusively Homo sapiens. In the animal kingdom, some playful dolphins can also create water bubble rings. Since water rings have lesser density than their surrounding they are more stable. This advantage allows dolphins to create complex ring configurations. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMCf7SNUb-Q

Hi Antonio...thanks for such a beautiful link...quite amazing how peaceful one feels when they watch dolphins. Also because they seemed to be playing with the rings they were blowing... its super entertaining to watch them...imagine the precision of their vision and the grace of their mobility to actually take their snouts right into the center of the rings....

    A delightful link, Antonio.

The following link goes to some research behind this form of playful behavior.

    http://faculty.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/fa...l.JCP.2000.pdf

In this study, the observations are of 4 young males age 3-8 years. Although I have no experience with dolphins, I would conjecture that in addition to play value, this behaviour would serve to determine status within the group and likely also be designed to show one's prowess to a potential mate.

In horses and dogs, with which I have considerable history, the males are in continual competition to gain and retain status, as status begets whatever advantages any given situation may offer.

I am just wondering, if we ignore physical differences would dolphins be more intelligent than human beings. Furthermore, they would certainly be without destructive or killer instinct.

    Re: dolphin ring

Intelligence calls for a struggle for self-examination so it can be expressed from a moral center....intelligence without that process is careless destruction and yes a killer instinct....

Dolphins are peaceful creatures also highly intelligent in their species...we have used our intelligence to make bombs...that takes arms and hands...they did not evolve these appendages...smiles...

    Re: dolphin ring

I believe I understand your meaning, Antonio, but Dolphins are carnivores and can be aggressive to their own kind as well.
This link to Wikipedia is most informative and even includes mention that Dolphins have been in use by the military of several nations for a long period, precisely because of their intelligence.

    A fascinating species, without doubt.
