    Your Shopping Priority

Working in the retail grocery system, it is easy to observe the current and changing trends in customer purchase patterns.

Organic, sugar-free, low-fat, high-fibre, reduced salt, we carry them all and part of my job is to place "shelf talkers" or small signage on these different items to make them more easily visible to the customer.

You have no idea how many times everything returns as "New and Improved!"

Some products stand the test of time.

So, when you go shopping, is there one thing that you consider to be the highest priority on your list?

Just for a rest from serious endeavour, such a discussion might prove both interesting and entertaining.

    Now list just one priority!

You may make more than one posting, but one item and reason per post, please.

This is a reading and skill testing question.

    Regards,

    Labelwench

I don't pay much attention to the claimed healthiness of foods, the recommendations change so often:

carbohydrates are good ... oh wait, they're bad ... oops, some are bad ... but certainly fats are bad ... well, not all ... ok, cholesterol must be bad ... no some of it's good ... salt is bad ... unless you happen to not be getting "enough" ... ummm, ask your doctor before lowering your salt intake ... smoking is bad ... except it appears to reduce the probability of some forms of mental disease ... well, everyone knows that chocolate and coffee are bad ... except maybe they aren't that bad ... what do you know, they might have many good effects ... jogging is certainly good ... except it can cause bone damage and stress internal organs and has been linked to at least one form of cancer ... etc.

The #1 cause of death and disability is life.

Why not live it once and do what you want than to do what you don't like and have to live twice as long to boot!

Preferably not, those don't dissolve in cold liquids if I'm making a homemade frapuccino

Thank you for indulging me, gentlemen, and I hope a few others will also deign to participate in the fun.

SB__UK, potatoes are an excellent choice. Any Irish in ye, lad?

Potatoes contain vitamins and minerals that have been identified as vital to human nutrition. Humans can subsist healthily on a diet of potatoes and milk; the latter supplies Vitamin A and Vitamin D.[23] A medium potato (150g/5.3 oz) with the skin provides 27 mg of vitamin C (45% of the Daily Value (DV)), 620 mg of potassium (18% of DV), 0.2 mg vitamin B6 (10% of DV) and trace amounts of thiamin, riboflavin, folate, niacin, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, and zinc. Moreover, the fiber content of a potato with skin (2 grams) equals that of many whole grain breads, pastas, and cereals. Potatoes also contain an assortment of phytochemicals, such as carotenoids and polyphenols.
SteveA, Instant Coffee? For making frapuccino and iced cappuccino, it is a basic ingredient, so I shall cease to wonder at your choice, being fond of iced cappuccino myself. A main priority? Does that mean you can live on the stuff? Merely enquiring, not a criticism.

There is one other item that almost all people have quite high on the priority list, be they vegan or meat eater, so let's have another round, what say?

Your next item on the list, pretty please.

I will contribute my current priority at that point.

It's an ongoing experiment - whether or not you can survive off just coffees of various flavors remains to be seen - if I'm still alive in another 10 years, the odds will be pretty good.

I'm of course kidding to an extent, but I do drink coffee most the time. Actually, my father has had some problems with gout over the last 5 years or so and he doesn't drink coffee though I've read some findings that supposedly claim a strong reduction in the frequency, duration and intensity of gout attacks. (I remember being told as a child that coffee was bad ... then again, we were also heading for another Ice Age and nuclear armegeddeon was heading our way. I'm beginning to wonder if it's all propaganda to keep the storyline interesting ... now we have impending financial disasters and global warming ... anyone feel like guessing the next round?)

    SteveA
The health benefits of moderate coffee drinking for most persons is well documented. Certain groups of people are at somewhat greater risk, including pregnant women and those with existing digestive system disorders.

Coffee is often cited as a cause of indigestion in some people. From a study of 'food combining', it is my observation that the digestive upset seems to follow the order and timing of what is ingested, the acid/alkaline argument once again.

For myself, I know that eating a banana on rising, followed by a cup of coffee, and I shall feel unwell.

Cherries, berries or grapes on the other hand, are fine. I suspect it is the greater starch and sugar in the banana, while the other fruits contain less sugar and have a greater acidity. Merely an observation, and others have made similar comment to me.

    Antioxidant
Coffee contains the anticancer compound methylpyridinium. This compound is not present in significant amounts in other food materials. Methylpyridinium is not present in raw coffee beans but is formed during the roasting process from trigonelline, which is common in raw coffee beans. It is present in both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, and even in instant coffee.[29]

    Re: Your Shopping Priority

    Hi, Lw.
I have been making a banana smoothie every morning for 30 years. I put a banana, of course, and any of the local, in season fruit I can find, at a good price. I also grow my own fruit and veggies.

Today it was.... 1 banana, 3 large strawberries, blue berries, black berries, a slice of home grown sweet tomato, 1/2 orange, granola, splash of kefir (liquid yogurt style drink), cinnamon, ginger(sometimes fresh), nutmeg(grated), pineapple juice.

So, when I shop, I go to the produce section first.

    Time uncovered brings new insights.
