Then our first change must be to move away from thinking in the terms of commodities.
The processes of the mind, our unique ways of thinking and expression, are still subject to free will and choice, and through our personal choices we can effect change.

But a rose by any other names still is a rose. If this rose can help make our lives easier then people will but it at any cost. The arbitrary price increases lie at the hand of the growers or producers and somehow it is also affected by the increase in demand for the same commodity. Economists indicate that increasing the price will somehow decrease the demand but this is not true for every life threatening commodity especially medicines.

Perhaps that is because the demand for life's continuance is the greater need.
At last observation, there were far more persons wishing to extend life, than there were means to accommodate same.
Therefore, by the simple business law of supply and demand, we can expect no relief from that quarter.
We must educate and thereby empower people, to have a better understanding of all the mechanisms whereby they can take charge of their own health, starting, I would suggest with the simple basics of nutrition and lifestyle, which I observe to be on a growth curve, and starting to effect a difference in the lives of the people who are diligently seeking to learn and apply such understanding.
When fewer people need the commodities of medicine, their power base will be seen to erode.

Healthy people living in the sparsely populated areas surely dont need as much medicines as people living in non-healthy environments of inner cities. But the inner metropolitan areas are where the money making machineries are located. Seems we cant have it both ways, but now the age of internet and cyberspaces communication does allow having it both ways, what do you think? Obviously, you are living it and enjoying it.Originally Posted by labelwench

An interesting remark, Antonio. Unfortunately, we have a very high incidence of type 2 diabetes, and one of the highest of FAS and FAE statistics, so perhaps medical needs are not predicated by population density so much as by lifestyle choice and genetics. Note, that in this instance, I consider lifestyle choice to have the greater influence, phenotype preceding genotype for many health considerations.
For myself, I believe that I am residing in the location of optimal choice for my genetic background and my psychological well-being. Though it was largely chance and the decisions of the adults in my life that brought me to this place, it is my choice to remain.
The inter-net is an excellent medium for observation, information sharing and communication. Though there are many other locations in the world that would be of interest for me to visit, if the opportunity arose, I cannot think of another location that I would care to reside. In that regard, it is the low population density and opportunities afforded by same, that is of most attraction to me.

It is admirable for you to imply that the grass is greener on your side of the fence.

I do hope that was not the implication. My intent was to convey, that for myself, I am in a location that affords me more opportunities than many others I have experienced or have contemplated.
Life is fraught with danger everywhere, and indeed, there are events pending in my life, where my creature comforts and pleasure in location shall not be able to comfort me.
The human condition, is the human condition, wherever on the globe it may occur.

That is you are at the top of Maslow's social pyramid. Could this be the same as the top of the food chain?Originally Posted by labelwench

You may be correct in assessing that I am 'at the top of my game' at this point in life, having acquired sufficient experience to aid in making balanced decisions, and possessing both short term and long term objectives.
Yet, we are all mortal, and while it is intellectually not difficult to comprehend our own mortality, it is still discomforting to contemplate the same condition in those who are close to us. An aging parent, immediate family members, one's spouse, closest friends etc. One understands the implications of their knowledge and experience, yet one still endures the frustration of recognizing that there is not a damn thing one can do about the course of certain events in their life.
