Ethene also known as ethylene is a colorless flammable gaseous hydrocarbon CH with melting point -169°C, boiling point -103.7°C. It is the first member of the alkene series of hydrocarbons. It is made by cracking petroleum and is now a major raw material for making other organic chemical (e.g. ethanal, ethanol, ethane-1, 2-diol). It can be polymerized to polyethene. It occurs naturally in plants, in which it acts as a growth substance promoting the ripening of fruits. Hypothetically, if ethene can be cracked again which is a process of breaking down chemical compounds by heat then it can be broken down to two identical simpler molecular ions: CH₂⁺⁺. Moreover, using catalytic cracking will lower the temperature required and modified the products such that CH₂⁺⁺ double positive molecular ions become dissolved in acidic solutions. These solutions can be used to treat RNA viral diseases such as HIV causing AIDS.
