It may be so that if we experience something that we perceive to be positive, and it causes us no real problems, then we can accept it and live our lives fairly normally. But what if the same or very similar thing happens to another, but this time it causes them fear and much anxiety. What then!

What I am talking about is hearing voices in your head, in the negative aspect of this phenomenon. It is called mental illness, psychosis, and in England you are put on a section of the Mental Health Act and kept in hospital against your will.

When it manifests in a seemingly positive way, well some can actually earn a living from it and instead of calling this mental illness, it is called instead clair-audience and those who exhibit this aspect are called mediums! I would be very interested in hearing what others think on this. It has been an observation of mine over the years, and I would like the opinions of others.

Mental health issues are no trivial matter (I'm not saying you think they are, just that I don't think they are). Although there is much debate about where such issues originate I think it's important to minimize their negative impact on society. That is the reasoning most "civilized" societies hide behind when dealing with mental illness. I think the real reason people are apprehended and put into mental health "care", is that people fear it and are not willing to dig deep into it's root causes.

There are some schools of thought that say mental health issues come from external sources while others say they come from our own minds. I'm inlcined to think it's a little of both. Our bodies respond to outside stimuli often as a defense of some sort; since our minds are part of our bodies it's possible the wrong defence is created which can be a source of mental illness.

There are also foreign objects like parasites, viruses, weather, etc that can influence our cognitive abilities in ways we have no control over.

I actually do a little bit of mental health work in my practice and it's been my experience that it's not just people hearing voices that get them in the system, it's when they hear voices that direct them to do things (usually violence) and they follow them. Typically those incarcerated cannot tell the difference between the voices and their own internal thoughts. I have yet to see a case where someone was in the system just for hearing voices. I think that simply hearing voices or experiencing extraordinary phenomena would not put you in the system (in Canada). It's about what you choose to do with that experience. If you can take something from the experience and enrich your life, then I say go for it. I once heard the trees hum while I was on my way to work and started to think about each life giving off a hum of a different frequency that all blend together to form a profound harmony. I don't think it means that I am ill. I am glad that I had that experience to allow me to reach that conclusion. I agree that our minds are subject to both internal and external influences, and given that we don't know that much about how we work, I think a little latitude is warranted.

You're right, Harmony Girl. In Canada far more people are walking around medicated than are hospitalized for their condition. People who hear voices are schizophrenic. Sometimes the voices are accompanied by hallucinations. There are two basic types of schizophrenia, negative and positive, where the negative manifests in withdrawal, detachment, and attention deficit, and the positive manifests in delusion and hallucination often resulting in odd behaviours. People who hear voices are usually of the positive type. A combination of the two types exists and also a form where neither type manifests an obvious expression of the explicit symptons. There is no discussing the metaphysical aspects of schizophrenia because the underlying causes are fairly well understood and genetic predispositions are found to occur in 80% of subjects affected by the disorder. The vulnerable chromosomes have been identified as well as some specific genes, although this is still a relatively new area of study. Offspring of schizophrenic mothers have a 25-50% possibility of contracting schizophrenia.

I have never in my life met a perfect human being yet, have you? In fact, while I do not hear voices or hallucinate I am prepared to admit that I do suffer from a mild form of schizophrenia myself. I don't need analysis to tell me that. Bottom line? I am not normal, but I can live with that because after all, who is?

known who hear voices have been afraid of the sound,have been regarded as
mentally ill.and put on medication,yet I know there is also a positive side to this phenomenon,and that people do hear voices that enhance their lives and
also enable them to help others,I have encountered many mediums in my time
some have been very honest and humble,while others have been misguided and somewhat deluded,however I have came to the understanding that there
is Real communication with those who have left this level and our now in another dimension of existence.communication is very possible if you are tuned in to the right frequents.
