Even though I do believe that we don't simply cease to exist when we die, I agree there are many misconceptions about our world that people as a whole take for granted as truth. These misconceptions can be very subtle and are the main barrier between us and the discovery of TOE.
For an example of how hard it would be to reprogram our minds to get rid of these misconception we can try a simple Experiment: Try to think that space does not exist in reality yet we as humans would still percieve it like we do now. This would work a lot like a videogame you would move around and interactas you would normally in a 3D enviornment and percieve everything normally but all distances between objects and volumes percieved would not exist.
Imagine how hard concepts like this could be for the human mind to accept and how hard a TOE along these lines of thought would be to prove. How hard would it be to reprogram ourselves to not believe in concepts like this that we take for granted?
I believe that many misconceptions just as subtle as the example above are he main hurdle for us being able to find a TOE anywhere in the near future. "We Could Solve all the World's Problems... We Just Don't Care to..."
