In order to be liberated from the 5 phases of transmigration: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth; a prayer to Padmapāni must be given as the Lamaistic charm: om mani padme hūm. Each syllable is supposed to have its own mystic power of salvation. It probably holds the key to Eastern mysticism of both Buddhists and Taoists alike. On the other hand, the medieval alchemists held the key to understanding the quantized states of earth, water, air, and fire. These 4 elements are not really quantized in the sense of being in quantum states of independently separated existence. Fire without air cannot exist and the mixture of earth with water is mud. Fortunately, the 5 phases have now reduced to 4 elements, a step closer to fundamental simplicity. The modern chemists understood the 3 states of matter as solids, liquids, and gases. With the exception of fire, each corresponds respectively to earth, water, and air. However, states of matter are simply the same matter in different physical forms. The fundamental simplicity is now reduced to just matter by itself.

Many modern physicists understood that ordinary fire is simply superheated gases, while few believe that fire is electrically charged ionized superheated gases called plasma. A simple test by a strong magnetic field will prove one or the other. However, it is almost impossible to tell otherwise by placing a permanent magnet near a flame. On the contrary, a spectroscope with a continuous bright background spectrum shows the absorption spectra of the flame as the normal and the anomalous Zeeman effects. The first can be described by Lorentz’s theory of the electron and Bohr-Sommerfeld model of electrons in atoms. The second can only be proved by the existence of quantized energy changes derived from the intrinsic angular momentum called the spin of the electrons. These show energy quantization but the rest mass of photons remains zero. Nonetheless, mass quantization is possible by a formulation of squares of energy as the quantum vacuum fluctuations of zero-point energies using the algebra of singular symmetric Hadamard matrices. This formulation will demonstrate that the fundamental simplicity is simply the square of energy.
