Thanks for the Kama-sutra correction Profpat; it has been years since I’ve been able to practice it.

    Re: The Role of Mankind

On the humourous side you make a Swiss-role by pushing him down the mountain,on the
serious side the role of mankind to me is again simple, yet complex appearing as it outworks through us,I see mankind on the crest of a creational wave that is carrying it along through an unfolding sequence called evolution.

Our role is to "surf" this wave and "go with the flow",this however I feel takes many lifetimes to perfect the technique of rolling with the wave, and every now and then a "wipe-out",we each awaken to our own area of consciousness whether that be shallow or deep,in each our own ways we share our experiences with those who will listen, thats how
many of us learn to stay afloat!

Our role is to offer help along the way to those who are more lost than we are by offering
a helping hand we are showing that we are one family and need to care for one another
by doing this we find ourselves and then know indeed the answer to the question "am I my brothers keeper"?

    regards michael.
    Humilty,coupled with boldness,surprises truth to

    Re: The Role of Mankind

Following what is known allows us to exist in the here and now and so better deal with it. Avenues for which proof is not possible are best not taken, for there are so many, although ToeQuestors can light up dark alleys in searches that begin with the known. There’s more that can be done than reading the Torah all week or watching “sick” sitcoms every night.

The Earth will go to cinders, like a meteor flash to someone far away, a mere pebble cast into the sea, but we, or others somewhere, will colonize larger space stations, the stars and their planets being too far away to be useful habitations for now (does anyone know why this is: stars so far apart?).

All’s right with the world in the general, more important sense, or it wouldn’t be here, for there must be rain and shine and progress—the specific sense, being right then, in its following way, too, even when cyclones kill 128,000 people or when a farmer wishes for rain when the wedding across the street wants sunshine.

Evolution meanders about, waiting eons for some organisms to glory in a mere waste product of photosynthesis: oxygen, and so it came to have a purpose.

Since all goes as it flows, we can start living, doing what we can with our zest, both enjoying and helping the world, unfettered by the more useless human doings. An unhappy person is not much of a useful person.

    — “I’ve Got to Run Now” —

See them hurrying hither and thither:
Oh, look at the time! They must go whither.
What sense the life that has no time to live?
Wherefore the wind that swirls in a dither?

    — The Bird of Time —

A moment of eternity in hand,
Caught from a wingèd creature on time’s sand.
Then put aside to later view in peace—
It flew! Now pursue it through Never-Land.

    — Looking Down the Road —

The walker down the morning path gazes
To where s/he’ll be when the next trail blazes.
Do we, too, whom this moment calls her own,
Stare past the scene into hazy mazes?

    — Drink Deep —

    To the morning-star I must say Good-bye,
For the sun’s fire now lights up the whole sky.
Vapors quickly ascend toward heaven’s dome.
Drink—ere life’s dew on your flower be dry!

    — Potent Spirit —

    In the night lies the healthy breath of morn;
    The giant oak sleeps within the acorn;
    The flower waits for spring inside the seed;
And so in a daydream is your life born.

    — Blurry —

Long we give our time to worry’s hurry,
Going breathless back and forth in scurry,
Making a living, but having no life—
Cold, unseeing, blinded by the flurry.

    — Remnant —

    In our youth we heard life’s call clear and plain;
Life was for living, hope and dreams became!
Ere we were aware, the echoes faded—
The regret that’s left does alone remain.

    — Walled In —

If you’re a captive of the lifeless day,
A wall around you, brick by brick, will weigh.
Habited you’ll stay until, one day,
Bricks will be moulded from your dusty clay.

    — Whence and Whither Flown —

Oh how life is frittered and thrown away
By running back and forth this and that way
In vain pursuit of meaningless details—
When a simpler life could be had straight away!

    — Re-Versed —

No time to taste life’s joy or read a verse?
Too busy for friends? Rushing for the hearse?
Then life’s lost in the living—that’s the curse.
Pause—save a life: simplify, start anew, reverse.

    — Return from Oblivion —

Hectic and hurried, we rush to success—
    Serenity can’t find us unless
We slow down, see shades, hear tones, feel textures,
Smell scents, and enjoy life’s loving caress.

Well, I guess first to live, then to reproduce, then to love God and love all others, and then to die.

    Best to all,

    Re: The Role of Mankind

    Hi Pat,

I must ask, are we eating, surviving and reproducing as an effective mechanism of an underlying framework, or do the repetitive actions you pointed out have little to do with anything other than just allowing life to live? Can the universe completely function without us?

    Re: The Role of Mankind

I would also add that from the ape to the man in the picture, the world got a lot more complicated. We went from just needing bananas and a place to procreate, to needing or wanting to dig in the ground and form societies; whereby we can maintain the maximum population numbers.

Did our increasing ability to question cause us to evolve our functions, or did our evolving function require us to better ask questions?

    regards,

    Tim

    Re: The Role of Mankind

That was a joke Tim, you know HaHa HeeHee LOL.
No the universe cannot survive without us, (mankind), there would be no love and therefore no purpose. Only LOVE is real Tim everything else illusion. Just ask Carole King.

    Best,

    Pat

    Re: The Role of Mankind

    Hi Pat,

I respect your opinions, but love is the illusion to me. I would agree more with your joke answer. In my opinion, love just helps in the society building aspect of things; which is needed because our function requires numbers (infrastucture). We can't do our jobs alone.

    Re: The Role of Mankind

    Hi, Tim.

    Great thread starter.

Mankind is a prisoner of scale: time/distance, mass and energy. No one gets out alive. An analogy is a group held prisoner in a room with a puzzle to solve. Each visitor is randomly allocated a unit of time in the room before they must leave and another new player enters. Those who solve the puzzle affirm their ability to participate at a whole other level.

Could holistic self-determination be the purpose of existence?

Pat, I think you are right. It is impossible for Man to truly understand his fellow Man. The only unifying force that pays tribute to our individuality is Love.
But nothing's lost. Or else: all is translation And every bit of us is lost in it... - James Merrill
